Random House presents the audiobook edition of Panic Room by Robert Goddard, read by Hollie Taylor and John Sackville.

Sometimes the danger is on the inside . . .

High on a Cornish cliff sits a vast uninhabited mansion. Uninhabited except for Blake, a young woman of dubious background, secretive and alone, currently acting as housesitter.

The house has a panic room. Cunningly concealed, steel lined, impregnable – and apparently closed from within. Even Blake doesn’t know it’s there. She’s too busy being on the run from life, from a story she thinks she’s escaped.

But her remote existence is going to be invaded when people come looking for the house’s owner, missing rogue pharma entrepreneur, Jack Harkness. Suddenly the whole world wants to know where his money has gone. Soon people are going to come knocking on the door, people with motives and secrets of their own, who will be asking Blake the sort of questions she can’t – or won’t – want to answer.

And will the panic room ever give up its secrets?

PANIC ROOM is Robert Goddard at his nerve-shredding best. A sliver of a mystery kicks off a juggernaut of a thriller. Layers of secrets, half truths and lies must be peeled back to reveal what really lies within.

Critic Reviews

Is this his best yet? For years Robert Goddard has been my go-to guy for a certain kind of storytelling, full of easy charm blended with sinister menace, and propulsive pace with twisty plotting
Splendidly serpentine and immaculately plotted, this is thriller writing at its very best
Robert Goddard has been writing imaginative first-class thrillers for nearly 30 years . . . Panic Room is an absorbing example of his superior storytelling, an excellent read
This is a tense read, fill of characteristic Goddard twists
As always, Goddard can be relied upon to entertain
A well-constructed page-turner of a thriller that’s very hard to put down
'[An] ingeniously twisted eco-thriller'

I enjoyed the book and storyline. Had no idea that would be how it ended.

I enjoyed the story and narration

The female narrator as 'Blake' uses a voice in which inference, tone, timbre, seriousness, and age inappropriate presentation seemed to show an unawareness of the plot, and for me made listening an insulting and embarrassing experience.
As well the pitch of the voice used was driving and torturous to hear.
I borrowed the book from the local library to read, and returned the audible purchase as it was an intolerable listen.
It would appear this narrator had not grasped the synopsis of the book, and was only focused on having narrating fun.
The male narrator, as 'Don' chose a variety of accents to use, depending upon with whom he was speaking.
Great story as RG's most usually are, not good as an audio book with these narrators.

appalling narration

The woman narrator was young and almost childish in her narration - felt myself cringe every time she spoke. I am a huge fan of Robert Goddard’s books and have read all but this one did just drag on a bit. I found myself wondering what was going to happen; and when it did happen it seemed to be over very quickly.

A little too long

I loved ‘Past Caring’ by Robert Goddard, but found ‘Panic Room’ long, convoluted and difficult to follow. The suspense was not there for me, only mild irritation. It’s ending was far fetched, if not contrived. Disappointing as I expected much more from this author.
