In seinem 1863 erschienenen Lehrbuch "Die Lehre von den Tonempfindungen als physiologische Grundlage für die Theorie der Musik" verfasst der Physiologe Hermann von Helmholtz eine Musiktheorie, die erstmals physikalische Messungen, Phänomene akustischer Wahrnehmung und kulturelle Prägungen einbezieht. Schwingungen, Schwebungen. Kombinationstöne, Klangfarben. Konsonanz, Dissonanz. Was wir hörend empfinden, beruht auf Illusionen, die uns feine, in Schwingung versetzte Härchen hinter einer ovalen Fensteröffnung vorspielen. Für seine Forschungen zur Vokalbildung der menschlichen Stimme baut Helmholtz einen Stimmgabelsynthesizer. Diese metallischen Oszillationen dienen der Karlsruher Musikformation Kammerflimmer Kollektief als Grundlage für synthetische Mixturen freier Improvisationen und mehr.
