Otti ist in den Ferien wieder bei Oma. Weil Oma bei ihrem letzten Besuch endlich gemerkt hat, dass Otti kein kleines Mädchen mehr ist, hat sie diesmal etwas Besonderes mit ihr vor. Auf keinen Fall möchte Oma, dass Otti sich wieder bei ihr mopst und so langweilt, dass sie lauter Unfug macht. Deshalb will sie ihr das Schachspielen beibringen. Otti macht große Augen, als Oma das schwarz-weiß gemusterte Brett auf den Tisch stellt und feierlich sagt: "Dies war das Schachspiel von deinem Opa." Aber die Marmorfiguren sind zerbrechlich und Omas Erklärungen ziemlich langweilig, so dass Otti bald auf andere Ideen kommt.
