Publisher's Summary

The New York Times best-selling author examines how people can drive creative, moral and organisational progress - and how leaders can encourage originality in their organisations.

How can we originate new ideas, policies and practices without risking it all? Adam Grant shows how to improve the world by championing novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battling conformity and bucking outdated traditions.

Using surprising studies and stories spanning business, politics, sports and entertainment, Grant explores how to recognize a good idea, speak up without getting silenced, build a coalition of allies, choose the right time to act and manage fear and doubt. Parents will learn how to nurture originality in children, and leaders will discover how to fight groupthink to build cultures that welcome dissent.

Told through dazzling case studies of people going against the grain, you'll encounter an entrepreneur who pitches the reasons not to invest, a woman at Apple who challenged Steve Jobs from three levels below, an analyst who challenged secrecy at the CIA, a billionaire financial wizard who fires employees who don't criticize him and the TV executive who saved Seinfeld from the cutting room floor. Originals will give you groundbreaking insights about rejecting conformity and how to change the world.

(Sheryl Sandberg, best-selling author of Lean In)

Interesting read

I started this book as a sceptic. So many books these days espouse the virtues that we are all 'special'.

I was refreshed to read the author's pragmatic approach to bring a 'practised' rather than a 'born' original.

Great read

Some interesting thoughts, but unnecessarily long.

there were a few useful tidbits but I'm not convinced it was worth the time. narrator was extremely slow, I played at +25% speed.

a must read for everyone...

wonderful book. Full of great ideas and originality...but I think the book fall into the trap of trying to convincing the readres by using too many, unnecessary and lengthy examples, hence became a bit commercial, I gues.

Very informative book expressing patterns of human behaviour supported by substantial data. Extremely useful for those who are curious of understanding the why and applying the how in certain social and work situations.

Good, week spoken and importantly useful challenge

Really enjoyed the book. Felt like it challenges me and opens my views. at no time did it feel like a lecture where the author was "right" but rather, here is an idea to consider.
Narrator was very good.

Insightful

Insightful, smart, sometimes surprising but all delivered in an entertaining fashion. Drawing on a mixture of anecdotal and academic sources - this book is a must read/listen.

Implies causation from small studies

While the book is interesting in some of its propositions, it does not create great engaging narratives and the scientific evidence is not compelling. The arguments in some places are more anecdotes mixed with small scientific studies that neither directly relate or robustly prove an underlying principle that can be clearly applied.

Best avoided by Sheep - and the followers of sheep

This book is simply extraordinary. It delivers a continual stream of practical insights that will enormously enhance your understanding of what influences people and particularly what factors lead to the creation of those notable individuals who leave an indelible and unique imprint upon the world. I know that I will be recommending it to scores of peers in the following months.

interesting and insightful look at creativity

An in depth insight into creative thinking. There are some great examples of outliers/ originals, although some of the stories do go on a bit and you almost miss the point. overall, an interesting listen but it could have been half the length.

One I could listen to again and again

Fred read this book so well that it could easily have been the author himself reading it. The subject matter is fascinating and each day I would get to work excited about what I'd learnt. The trouble is I cannot remember it all, the good news is I'm looking forward to listening to the book again as the information in it was so helpful.

Starts well

The book starts well and is engaging. Later found myself unsure of why I wasn't listening to it and whether I agreed with some Author's generalised sweeping statements. However some useful thought provoking content.
