From Australia's master storyteller comes an endearing and engaging novella about a journey as unexpected, painful, intriguing and character-filled as life itself. A cruise was the promise. Paddy and Jenny Davern have had a long and happy marriage together in Sydney. Together they embark on a cruise to London, for the last leisurely journey in each other's company.

But what of the stories she used to tell herself? That 'real life' begins only once you're thin or beautiful, that good things happen only to other people. Your Own Kind of Girl reveals a childhood punctuated by grief, anxiety and compulsion and tells how these forces shaped Clare's life for better and for worse. This is a heartbreaking, wise and at times playful memoir.

Cute. Nice Aussie references and great narrator
This story was a nice easy listen while I worked.
I enjoyed the Aussie references and humour. I thought the narrator was brilliant with his versatility with character voices.
A nice story of family values, love and the reality of life.

A mellow, rich story - excellent narration
Another very enjoyable audiobook, covering many familiar themes with humor and sensitivity. I liked the Australian "vibe" and descriptions of Sydney, the beaches, the environs.
I have awarded 5 stars for the narration, despite his inability to correctly pronounce "library " or "librarian!" In every other way, it was excellent.

Highly recommended reading!
What a fabulous story! So very well researched, engaging and entertaining all at the same time. It explores topics such as society's deplorable attitudes towards it's more senior citizens, the heart-wrenching pain of dementia for both the sufferer and their family, finding love and excitement in old age and finally euthanasia. Now this might sound like quite a miserable list of topics, but the author discusses them with love, warmth and a good sprinkling of humour. :-D This book is a must-read for everyone - particularly those who want to embrace an adventurous and enjoyable life when they too get older.

A lovely visit with an elderly Australian gent
This book was lovely, and it had me humming Waltzing Mathilde for days. (Don't worry - the song is never actually sung, in case you're averse.) There's something gutsy about a man who's tried his best, loved well and long, and is still able to look back, honestly assess his mistakes, and bravely reach out for some last minutes of joy. I was sorry to come to the end.

Sigh...
There isn’t much I can say to fully praise this book without giving things away, but this might have been one of the funniest, kindest, thoughtful and most honest books I’ve ever listened to. Each character was so fully realized and constructed that in the end, I felt I had to leave my own family. This thought provoking book is a must read for anyone who loves life, laughter and thinking.

Great writing, difficult subject
First, I will say that this was a deeply moving story for me. I loved the humor splashed in, especially the final driving exam - Give’em hell Arthur!
This is the first book I’ve heard Jason Chong narrate and I enjoyed his delivery of each character. Well done!
Would I consider this a typical romance...not by a long stretch. But is was such a sweet story, I’m glad it was featured in the Audible Escape package.

Brilliant! An unusual story line, brilliantly written and narrated.
The story line was unusual and fascinating.
Excellent characterisation, with no clues as to how the story would develop. The story kept me interested all the way through, I loved it even though it covered a challenging topic. Thanks Ceridwen 😀

Lovely story
I really enjoyed the story and narration.
The characters were extremely warm and the description was very vivid.
At some point, towards the end, I was confused as it moved from story to story.
