Way more complex than I thought

I never had to read this in my school years, and wonder how any of us did. Was very well narrated with the voices helping make the times and conditions really clear. What a time to live in, and no wonder so many emigrated.

Awesome narration

The narration on this was fantastic. Listening to Fagan makes your skin crawl - it's that good. I had to get the unabridged version. I can't imagine Dickens with the wonderful commentary cut out. I highly recommend this book and am going to check out what other's have the same narrator.

Its Just Me

This was my first attempt at getting through Oliver Twist, I am mot sure why I didn't think ot woyld be as heavy anf wordy as it is. Its a good, deep, interesting book. A Lot of brain and emotional and moral food. I simply had a difficult time getting through some parts bwcause it seems like they rambled ceaselessly.

Captivating storytelling

Having known only the musical version of this story, I was delighted to really experience the the rich writing of the novel. This particular narrator was fabulous- really colorful voice infused with humor and weight, and gave life to all the characters expertly. What a treat!

Brilliant Performance

Oliver Twist is a well told story, and in this case it was narrated fantastically. I don't usually like when the narrator tries to do "voices", but in this case he was great.

Absolutely wonderful

What made the experience of listening to Oliver Twist the most enjoyable?

I have never read or seen the entire story, so this was a delight. Martin Jarvis brought the characters to life and was consistent throughout the whole story. I wouldn't even think of giving this anything less than 4 stars.

Magnificent.

Of all the books to which I've ever listened, going back pre-audible to CD's and tapes, Martin Jarvis is the most compelling reader. He is perfect and the voices he gives the characters makes them as alive as if you were overhearing them speak. It took me a bit of time to warm up to the Oliver Twist storyline, but Mr. Jarvis's kept me listening, and the story is filled with horror and sweetness. At times, Dickens rambles on in a way that reminds me of The Christmas Carol, but it's a lovely story and well worth one's time.

Rightfull Called a Classic

I read a modern sequel to Oliver Twist, called Dodge & Twist and was bothered by the constant foul language. So, I decided to read the original, to see if there was as much cursing in it. There was some, but nowhere near as much as the sequel. I was familiar with the story — who isn’t? But I had never read an unabridged version of this before. My father had Classics Illustrated Comics, and I have “read” many of the classics that way, but not many of the originals. As usually happens when I do read the original of one of these great classics, I am amazed at the skill of the author. These have rightly earned their place among the classics, and so-called sequels, written by modern authors, pale by comparison. Great performance on this one, too.

A classic story read to perfection

Martin Jarvis, in my very humble opinion, makes the audio books that he reads come alive brilliantly with each characters voice that he creates. As someone else said in another Dickens review, ‘It’s as if there where 20 actors on stage and they were all him’. So ‘Oliver Twist’ was no disappointment to me and I can thoroughly recommend this classic story read by a man who is master of his craft.
Just to point out that the Audible title ‘Oliver Twist Part 1’ is a little confusing. Part 2 is included in the download. You will have the complete book.

So much more than the films

I like to listen to Dickens stories when driving, especially when driving long distances. Dicken's use of language is always a delight and the names of his characters bring a smile to my face. I also tend to choose those books that have Martin Jarvis as the narrator because he brings the characters to life just by the different voices and accents. Oliver Twist is a much longer book than I thought from watching the television adaptations and the films. More happens after the failed burglary than I realised.

Classic rags-to-riches tale

Brought up in the workhouse, orphan Oliver escapes to London and finds himself caught in Fagin’s criminal underworld. Everyone knows the basic plot of this classic tale, but I was surprised to learn how much of it was new to me. It turns out that the many film and TV versions rarely do justice to the full story as the author intended, so the second half of the story is often left out. I’ve had ‘Oliver Twist’ on my bookshelf for about thirty years but have never managed to get past the first chapter. Finding the weighty tome available as an audiobook, I jumped at the chance to listen rather than read. The lovely Martin Jarvis brings the text to life with a marvellous variety of voices and accents, and even succeeds in making those passages where Dickens goes off on a tangent about life in general appealing to the listener. Given that I also have ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ and ‘Great Expectations’ gathering dust on my bookshelves, I think audio versions of these two will soon be on my listening agenda.

Dickens + Jarvis = Brilliant

What made the experience of listening to Oliver Twist the most enjoyable?

Martin Jarvis makes this well-known tale come to life by the vividness of his characterisation and breadth of expression. He is unmatched as a narrator of Dickens' prose, which is, as always, a treasure trove of delight.

Outstanding

My first read of Oliver Twist, having only previously seen film and stage productions. Dickens’ character portrayal and story-telling is incomparable, and Oliver Twist is no exception. Outstanding narration by Martin Jarvis, whose gift for almost inhabiting the characters, brings each one to life, making the audiobook Oliver Twist as entertaining, if not more so, than any dramatised version of the book. Outstanding.

Excellent narration of an excellent book

Martin Jarvis brought this well loved classic to life with his wonderful range of voices. I had forgotten just how much veiled criticism of living and social conditions Dickens incorporates into his novels. The narrator seems to find just the right tone for each character and situation.
