Dickens la rappresenta spogliandola di ogni fascino e romanticismo, ma il principio del Bene, sopravvissuto a ogni circostanza avversa, alla fine trionferà comunque. Uno dei primi racconti sociali che denuncia, con formidabile umorismo nero, i mali della società inglese ottocentesca.
