About this listen

I know about my reputation as Never Harbor’s secluded single dad. But I have everything I need: my imaginative son, my dog, and our remodeled cottage by the sea. That is, until my nanny quits.

My brother’s ex-fiancee, Wendy Darling, is an elementary-school teacher with a free summer. The last thing I need is to get tangled in his mess, but my family thinks she’s a perfect fit for the job. Turns out, she fits in better than I could have imagined.

Wendy is nothing like I expected. She’s kind and adventurous, with a beautiful laugh that washes my worst nightmares away. She pushes past my silence and sees more of my true self than anyone has in years. And my six-year-old son is falling for her just as quickly.

Being with Wendy can never happen. Not when my younger brother is her ex-fiance. Not when she’s so close to our family. Not when our small coastal town gossips the way that it does. But after so long in the dark, Wendy makes me feel something.

Falling for her feels a lot like flying instead. I know happy endings only belong in fairy tales, but I’m close to stealing one for myself.

I was intrigued by the dichotomy of loyalties when falling for a sibling's ex. There were some good moments like when Wendy speaks up, saying, "Because sometimes just achieving things for the sake of saying you did it is the goal. I don't need to get a publishing deal, or open a restaurant, or hell, solve world hunger. I just want to be proud of myself. Sometimes that's it. That's enough. I'm enough. But it was never enough for you. And that hurts. ." In a world like ours that idolises success, wealth, achievement, etc., I really like that this character could create for the joy of creation and that she felt a sense of self worth that enabled her to set a healthy boundary. That's a strong point for me and why I gave it 3 stars overall. But you know the old saying, "Less is more"? I wish that had been employed here in the intimacy scenes. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a bit of heat when done well, but this reached a level of oversharing that I found unappealing and actually boring. I found myself skipping to the end of many chapters just to try to find the story line again. I reckon that cut the book down by maybe a third. So yeah, not a favourite for me but not everyone will see it that way.

Kudos to the narrators though.

Interesting premise, but....
