Possession of dragon contraband in the Arterian kingdom is a guaranteed brutal execution.

When twenty-two-year-old Katerina Blackwind finds a dragon egg buried in her father’s grave, she begins to question everything she thought she knew. She must return the forbidden dragon hatchling—Daeja—north to the secretive Dragon Lands: where dragons roam free and a rebellion group resides.

But she can’t do it on her own – smuggling a dragon hatchling across the realm during a war between Arterians and rebels means she can be killed by either side. She knows there’s only one person she can truly trust, her old flame, Cole Ashbourne.

Yet, Cole is much different than the last time Kat saw him: deliciously chiseled in all the right places with a raw power lingering beneath the surface. Cole is torn between his responsibilities as a newly-promoted Captain in the King’s military, and his heart.

Kat works on a plan to get Daeja to the Dragon Lands while keeping a low profile at the military outpost. Though, having a room next to the sinisterly provocative Darian Raventhorn proves to be anything but easy.

Danger lurks at every turn, and as more secrets are unearthed, Kat is left to question everything she thought she knew about dragons, her family, love, and the kingdom.

Absolutely loved this story line. Reminded me of Aragon but girl version with spice. So devastated there’s no audio book 2, especially with that ending 😱

Definitely team Darian

This audiobook is all about the characters. Kat is strong, confident and fiercely capable, but it is Deja, her dragon, who steals every scene. She is chaotic, oddly wholesome and unintentionally hilarious. Her obsession with chicken and completely unfiltered one liners had me grinning more than once.

The duet narration works well overall. Hannah Chiclana, Aaron Donahue and Rhys Blackburn bring clear distinction to the cast, with the male voices especially adding depth and edge. I did find the pacing a little slow, so speeding it up made for a much better listening experience. There are also a few moments where the audio levels dip, which can be distracting.

The romance leans into a love triangle, and Darian easily stands out. Morally grey, sharp tongued and just the right amount of dangerous, he brings a tension that the softer alternative cannot quite match.

🖤 🧡 I’m Team Darian 🖤 🧡

This book gives female Eragon vibes with Kat being strong, passionate and smart and Daeja who is our sassy, fierce but wholesome and unknowingly funny dragon hatching. All the charaters are well fleshed out and thank you for giving us a slightly aged up main cast (20’s not teens).
The love triangle adds to the plot, not is the plot with sprinklings of spice.
The cliff hanger at the end got me good and im so glad I found this series so close to the second audiobook being released so I dont have to wait to long.
The narration is really well done, only thing I dont enjoy is the dragged out breathy way the male voice actor performs the men that seem to be 40 and above. I have to speed these parts up sometimes.
The Inheritance Cycle series was and still is one of my favourite series and this book so far is filling that aged up version I have wished for.
