Publisher's Summary

In a world struggling back from the brink of apocalypse, life is harsh. But for Elspeth Gordie, born with enhanced mental abilities that would see her sterilised or burned if discovered, it is also dangerous.

There is only survival by secrecy, and so she determines never to use her forbidden powers. But it is as if they have their own imperative, and their use inevitably brings her to the attention of the totalitarian Council that rules the Land....

First Time @ 36yo

As this was my first time reading, or should I say listening it was inwombing. Thank you Isobelle for your imagination takes me to a place a budding writer can only dream to achieve. Truly enthralled, Ebony

Brilliant!

I really enjoyed this audio book. Normally I'm a bit hesitant to listen to author read books as they aren't usually as good as the professionals. However this is not the case for Isobelle Carmody. Her smooth voice captivates you and she embodies each character's tone wonderfully. I especially love her highlander accents! Can't wait to snap up the rest of the series!

Very enjoyable

Have read book years ago but enjoyed audio version. The 4 for performance was due to chapter numbers out of sync, chapter on screen would say 15 but voice would say 14. Actual performance of voice was very good.

This book caught my heart for life

I love Isobelle Carmody and I love obernewtyn, Isobelle voice and accent changed so dramatically throughout the book it almost felt like two different readers. But none the less it was brilliant a must for an YA fantasy fan.

Awesome YA distopian fantasy

This book was my favorite teenage reads, I'm so glad it is now an audiobook. The world it builds is imaginative and original and this book is only the first of a long series. The author performs this book and she does a good job. If you like mind powers and young woman's quest against persecution in a distopian future then you'll like this book.

Love this Series!

I have read and listened to this series repeatedly, first when I was in high school, again when I started my first job and had the privilege of meeting the truly wonderful author, and then every subsequent wintery holiday when I felt like cosying up with a great series that would take me away from everyday life. In a post-apocalyptic world under totalitarian rule orphan Elspeth and the other ‘misfits’ – children born with unusual mental abilities – are sentenced to exile in remote Council farms for treatment. With her freedom destroyed and suffering from the loss of her parents Elspeth must hide her powers to survive. Dealing with themes of prejudice, discrimination and cruelty but also resilience of the human spirit I can’t help myself to keep coming back to this series. Even though the release of each subsequent book in the Obernewtyn Chronicles took many years of anxious nail biting , I can’t help but feel it was worth the wait!

Brilliantly read version of the book

I first read this book back in the mid 90's whilst at school and fell in love with it and Elspeth so was really looking forward to listening to it on audio, especially when I found out that it was narrated by Isobelle herself.

The story follows Elspeth Gordie a misfit who gets sent to Obernewtyn up in the mountains. The book is set in the future after a nuclear holocaust, which they call the Great White and follows Elspeth on her journey for orphan home to Obernewtyn and her story whilst there. It then leads on perfectly to the second in the series - The Farseekers, which I will be listening to next
