Story
Detective Inspector Logan McRae is finally getting back on his feet after the events of the last few years. Putting things behind him. Getting better.… But it was never going to last. A body turns up on the outskirts of Aberdeen: burned from the neck up, hands chained behind the back. More murders follow - all gruesome, and with only one obvious connection. The similarities between the real-life killings and the plot of a best-selling novel about witchcraft seem more than coincidental, but the more Logan digs the more dangerous and blurred the line between fact and fiction becomes.

Publisher's Summary
She can't prove he did it. But she might die trying....
From the Sunday Times number one best-selling author of the Logan McRae series comes a stand-alone spin-off featuring DS Roberta Steel
Revenge is a dangerous thing....
Detective Chief Inspector Roberta Steel got caught fitting up Jack Wallace - that's why they demoted her and quashed his sentence. Now he's back on the streets, and women are being attacked again. Wallace has to be responsible, but if Detective Sergeant Steel goes anywhere near him, his lawyers will get her thrown off the force for good.
The Powers That Be won't listen to her, not after what happened last time. According to them, she's got more than enough ongoing cases to keep her busy. Perhaps she could try solving a few instead of harassing an innocent man?
Steel knows Wallace is guilty. And the longer he gets away with it, the more women will suffer. The question is: how much is she willing to sacrifice to stop him?

Funny!
I’m new to MacBride and was pleasantly surprised to laugh out loud so often during a crime novel. Much owing to the great timing of Worsley’s delivery. Not your typical characters either, nicely rounded without laboring the point. Only downside was that the crime plot formula was predictable, but it was made up for by the writing. I recommend it!

I was a bit dubious as to how I would I enjoy this book without Logan in it. Simple answer. Just as much as all of his other books. The storyline keeps you interested the whole way through. I have to say the scene in the school gym had me laughing , poor bugger. Great narration as always by Steve Worsley . I will be looking for more titles narrated by him.

Another MacBride gem!!!
Stuart MacBride is on my very short list of favorite authors that includes the likes of Adrian McKinty, Tana French, and Stuart Neville. His iconic hero, Logan MacCrea, deserves a novel’s length time off after what he’s been through, but holy mother of pearl, I miss him. Thank God for this trip back to his world of characters, this time the charge being led by the indomitable and hilarious Roberta Steele. The plot is vintage MacBride, but for me the real treat is his use of language and drive-off-the-road humor. “Everyone should have someone to love . . . To trust . . . Someone that doesn’t need shearing three times a year . . . “ What a breath of fresh air after searching through so many tedious, formulaic “thrillers.” All hail his beardiness!!!

Delightful read, wicked sense of humour.
Great production beginning to end. Wonderful narration and would be hard to go wrong with the material provided. The characters are wonderful. I have read or listened to all of MacBride’s books and it is interesting to see life from Steele’s perspective. I laughed out loud and uncontrollably more times during this book ..... not sure if it is a good thing or very, very scary to share MacBride’s sense of humour. Great book can’t wait for the next installment

Really good story about Roberta Steele and her new team. There are some laugh out loud funny bits. Roberta can be maddening at times but she's a good cop. I miss Logan but this is her story.
And this includes one of the best lines ever about fake news.

"The man can write!' Ditto that!
Thoroughly enjoyed it! I've listened to several of the books in this series, and have to laugh at my increasing vocabulary of the "faul" and hilariously "dirty" exchanges between the police force. "Roberta" having been honored with the largest vocabulary. My first language is German, then American English, some Spanish, and now learning a whole new kind of lingo. I also love the idea of "words of the day" to substitute for others word play games amongst the DC, C, etc. This author has such a huge arsenal of words and expressions for different scenarios, one never gets bored. The cast of characters is neverendingly entertaining. Mostly they seem rude and mean to each other, but when the chips.are down, watch out, or the bad guys may end up with a chunk missing somewhere. In the midst of all of the abuse + violence is also compassion and kindness. Number one item of the daily diet is beer and whiskey, then "chips" (fries), and "beans", and so on. It's a miracle.that anyone lives past 30. :) They'd laugh you out of the pub if you mention "gluten-free". The narrator is absolutely amazing and perfect for this author's books! Love listening to him. On to another installment. Audible addict in Santa Fe, NM

THE GUY CAN WRITE!
I have been a 'Crime Reader' for decades. My wife is a Superior Court Judge in the criminal division after slaving for 26 years as a Public Defender. She came out of a top five law school but, as a "principled" human, she shunned corporate (read $) insouciance in order to see that folks were getting a 'fair deal' (as far as that is possible in this Zoo we call the American Culture (sic). My dinner conversations over the decades have painted a broad, clear vision of American Justice (sic) as distributed by the USA.
MacBride, through his, at times, brutal depictions and loamy language, spins it like no other. "Dirty Wash Cloths" like Baldacci and his ilk are essentially Cartoonists, not crime writers, and their formulaic tripe disgusts me.
This guy, Craig Johnson, was off to a reasonable start, but he, too, sank into the bowels of repetitive nonsense. Euro writers of note are vastly superior; Philip Kerr being a good example of a group too large to fit in here.
What is so terrifyingly obvious is that Americans are DEVOID of ANY CULTURAL IDENTITY as expressed through their popular writers.
Truck them somewhere, lured by the promise of some of their vapid awards, and shoot them all! Alas, they likely only have one 'honest' book in them (their ensembles penned by others), so eliminating them will only ratchet up their myriad pretenders to squeeze out more crap in their "honor" (sic).
We are in SERIOUS TROUBLE!

Read after In The Cold Dark Ground
And before Blood Road. Enjoyable spinoff. Tufty is our surrogate Logan in this book. And his time with Steele is similar to Logan’s which gives that familiarity. But it’s also how we wish Logan would be with Steele. Fun and happy some of the time. Agree with the reviews that don’t love the ending. Definitely need a heavy dose of suspended belief. Overall it’s worth the credit and of course a must-listen for fans of the LM series.

Steele and a Murdered Dog
I've read most of Stuart MacBride's Logan McRae books. I like Logan. He always tries to do the right thing. However, this book is about Detective Sergent Steele, not Logan. He doesn't appear until the end. Steele is dealing with the usual bad guys. But for some reason the author decided to throw in a poor old woman who is beaten up and her dog microwaved. Yep. Microwaved. I don't know the details. I fast forwarded through the chapter. If you're a dog lover, then skip this book. There is nothing that comes close to redeeming it when you know the author decided to throw in a murdered dog. I'm returning it.

This is a gloriously entertaining piece of Tartan Noir from Stuart McBride featuring a lead character who feels like a genuine force of nature.
Readers of the Logan MCrae series will well remember the rather unfortunate Detective Inspector Roberta Steel who was thrown under the bus, discredited and demoted to Detective Sergeant. Steel is every bit of Scottish Detective curmudgeon, irreverence, anti-establishment sentiment and downright rudeness ever written all piled into one big bitter pile of spite. It's a brilliant and darkly humorous move that bundles all that and a strong desire for justice up into a horny married lesbian copper responsible for two young daughters.
She crashes about with the best of intentions dragging poor Tufty her partner with her intio scrape after scrape. The humour is constant though possibly a little juvenile for some. The thing that I love most about McBride is the writing style. The narrative gives even rooms and inanimate objects character. I think it's probably the first time I've ever actually felt sympathy for an interrogation room. The dialogue is brisk and has that almost Pulp Fiction nuance of not being afraid to go off on a tangent, just like people do.
All this chaos and depth needs a good performance. Steve Worsley is a great fit! Maybe his ladies don't sound the most feminine but he launches himself into the whole thing with gusto and certainly gives the impression he's enjoying this particular script.
This really is a book I would thoroughly recommend. The story and characters made me both laugh and excited. I mean it when I use the term noir above though, this isn't for the super-sensitive or the politically correct. It really does describe some very tough situations but the humanity of the characters shines through and the scene where Roberta declares that she was *trying* to be nice made me laugh out loud but showed she has a heart in there.
An extremely good use of a credit with the fudge-flavoured wombles a bonus!

The best yet!
The latest and best in my opinion. I hesitated before buying this since it’s a Roberta Steel rather than Logan MacRae centred book but I shouldn’t have worried. Hilarious and filthy it kept me listening from start to finish. Keep writing Mr MacBride. Your readers need you!

All delicious loveliness.
Where does Now We Are Dead rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Right up there.
Any additional comments?
If you like Stuart MacBride you'll love this. If you don't, well try electro-therapy or something. Another gorgeous jolly romp from an author who get's better.
No Lazarus this time, it's all about Steel, and what's not to love about her. I did once try to join the police (too blind) but I suspect I would have never have met folk like these, but you can actually imagine a lot of the action could happen in similar outrageous ways.
Look, as said, if you like MacBride you know what he's about and will enjoy this 'instalment' of Police Scotland's finest. You've probably got it already, or will anyway, so why am I wasting my time telling you to?

Roberta Steele
What a great story. Roberta Steele, Logan Macrae’s boss, colleague and pain in the side, gets her own story and it is thoroughly enjoyable. In some respects Steele is the most likeable character in the series - the gritty, foul mouthed police officer who sails close to the wind but is ultimately a good cop. I’d love more Roberta Steele books please.

Loved it. That woman is brilliant!!!
A spin off from the McRae series. This includes old history from these books but still lets an excellent not story with loads of humour, pathos and Steele carrying it all off. Noise to get a more rounded view of he. A laugh out load, fast paced unput downable book. Guid Scots humour, guid Scots accents. Braw

Marvellous reader, memorable characters all. I particularly liked the euphemisms for the more obvious swear words!!
