Story
I'm the girl you'll never see coming. Blink and you're dead—another target checked off my list. Until one night, my carefully ordered existence falls apart. A bloodbath and a car crash later, I find myself in the grasp of four gorgeous, intimidating men. My captors claim they're holding me for my protection. I can't quite believe that.
Publisher's Summary
Gemma Summers is unlucky in love. She's known it since third grade, when her first crush blew a spitball into her hair, and a decade-long string of bad dates, boring sex, and abysmal morning afters has done nothing to improve her prospects. But when a random radio call-in contest lands her courtside tickets to the hottest playoff game of the season, Gemma's luck may finally be on the upswing, even if it doesn't exactly seem like it when the dreaded Jumbotron kiss cam lands on her and her date, who's too busy ignoring her to notice.
Chase Croft doesn't date. Despite ample opportunity as Boston's most eligible bachelor, the reformed bad boy would rather put his energy into taking over the family business than weed through a world of gold diggers to find an honest woman. But when the beautiful girl in the seat next to him becomes a courtside spectacle at the hands of her loser boyfriend, he can't help but step in and save the day.

It started out strong....
The story started out strong with Gemma, a seemingly ballsy commitment-phobe babe who wins courtside tickets to an NBA game and gets kissed by a hot stranger when her "boyfriend" ignores the kiss-cam and leaves her hanging.
Turns out that the hot stranger is a billionaire, she runs away like a Cinderella into a cold and rainy Boston night, he follows and encourages her to let him take her home, they spend a bit of time in the car playing a "getting to know you game" with a lot of sexual tension, they get to her place, she gets out of the car and he follows her in the rain, kisses her again and its all downhill from there.
What confounds and irritates me is that this guy, Chase, tells her straight up when they're in the car that he doesn't do commitments etc etc, and she says ditto, but then he manipulates a situation the next day that brings her to his fancy office where he tells her once again that he doesn't do commitment etc etc but also starts to issue directives.
There are so many times in this book where he "grabs" or "drags" or "pulls" her around, out of the car, behind him, out of her chair, out of the room and completely ignores her protests.
She says "no" sooooo many times throughout the entire story and he goes ahead and does, or makes her do what she said no to.....
Him: "You're coming with me"
Her: "No"
Him: "Yes you are" (grabs her and they go)...
Him: "Sit down"
Her: "No"
Him: looks at her menacingly and she feels afraid so she sits down
Her: "Chase, put me down"
Him: "No"
Her: "Let go of my hand"
Him: No"
You get the picture.
And all these scenes are punctuated with sexual tension which I guess the author decides makes it ok?
Gemma spends just about the entire book being intimidated and coerced by men and yielding at every turn. At one point, two of Chase's employees (aka henchmen) are escorting her to her apartment. They hand her a phone which she doesn't want to take, so she says "no".
One of the guys looks menacing and dangerous, growls at her in a threatening tone to take the phone, so she does because she's afraid.
I mean, come on now!
Gemma is a halfwit. She has no backbone and is too easily influenced and controlled. She even calls him "the bossiest, most annoying person in the history of mankind ". Her tolerance of this behaviour makes her complicit and an enabler.
And Chase is a bully who doesn't take no for an answer from the woman which makes him an abusive tool.
The unlikely familiarity after having literally only spent incremental hours in each other's company over a couple of days was ludicrous.
There is a lot of "I could tell that behind that frown was a smile ", and "I could tell that behind the harsh tone there was tenderness ". And she was able to ascertain the intricacies and complexities of his moods, demeanour and feelings all within a few days of having met him.
Give me strength!
The only characters worth the time are Gemma's two best friends, who are probably the most realistically portrayed individuals in the entire book.
Narration is 4 stars. Carly Robins does a decent job, but she's lost a star for having narrated this book.

long winded but sweet
it was a sweet story. the main character overshares minor irrelevant details that makes the main character seem more anal then artsy and mysteriously as I assume the writer is trying to make her. But overall it's a really sweet story would have made a better 6hr long story then I wouldn't have felt like forwarding through irrelevant internal dialogs and overexplanations.
