The audiobook behind the hit Channel 5 documentary.

A glimpse of life inside the world’s most secretive country, as told by Britain’s best-loved travel writer.

In May 2018, former Monty Python stalwart and intrepid globetrotter Michael Palin spent two weeks in the notoriously secretive Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, a cut-off land without internet or phone signal, where the countryside has barely moved beyond a centuries-old peasant economy but where the cities have gleaming skyscrapers and luxurious underground train stations. His resulting documentary for Channel 5 was widely acclaimed.

Now he shares his day-by-day diary of his visit, in which he describes not only what he saw - and his fleeting views of what the authorities didn’t want him to see - but recounts the conversations he had with the country’s inhabitants, talks candidly about his encounters with officialdom, and records his musings about a land wholly unlike any other he has ever visited - one that inspires fascination and fear in equal measure.

Written with Palin’s trademark warmth and wit, the journal offers a rare insight into the North Korea behind the headlines.

Too short for 1 credit!

I didn't realise how sorry toys book was until it was too late. It shouldn't be 1 credit or the cash equivalent.

too short

This is a real treat, especially as I had missed the filming series. well read, and emotionally insightful. What would have been great would have been more extended interpretations. But still very enjoyable. Just a bit too short but that should not put you off.

Micheal Palin is the David Attenborough of the Travel World

Micheal Palin for me is the David Attenborough of the travel world. I love his voice and personality and he makes travel accessible for all, from the comfort of your own home.
I really loved the insights into the mysterious North Korea and it has given me a new found fascination for the place. I’ve already downloaded an autobiography of someone who escaped from there and started to find out more about the history of it.
I throughly recommend this book and find the other reviews about it being too short strange. Too short for what? It is what it is.

disappointing

I have enjoyed several of Michael Palin's travel books, but I found this one disappointing. I learnt nothing new about North Korea and Palin sounded older and lacking in enthusiasm.

Eye opening

So much more detail than the documentary and shows much more of Korean life and insights that cannot be filmed. Michael Palin as magical as ever.

Somewhat short

Always a fan of Mr Palin, I greatly looked forward to this audio book. In hindsight perhaps a little too much. Overall I thought it was short on content and I honestly didn’t learn anything particularly revealing about North Korea or its poor oppressed people that I already didn’t know. Moreover I thought Palins obvious distain for Trump somewhat trite and completely out of place. To me at times he seemed to be more predisposed to Kim Jong-un, which is bizarre when one takes into account what is well known about the North Korean dictator. I wasn’t looking for Mr Palin to excoriate the North Korean dictator. I just wanted him to maintain a balance. However in that particular section of the story I thought he failed to do so. Overall I was a little disappointed.
