Publisher's Summary

The entire world knows Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future; as Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties; as Mike Flaherty in Spin City; and through numerous other movie roles and guest appearances on shows such as The Good Wife and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally engaged in Parkinson's advocacy work, raising global awareness of the disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, the world's leading non-profit funder of PD science. His two previous best-selling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the while exhibiting his iconic optimism. His new memoir reassesses this outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges.

In No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, Michael shares personal stories and observations about illness and health, ageing, the strength of family and friends, and how our perceptions about time affect the way we approach mortality. Thoughtful and moving, but with Fox's trademark sense of humour, his book provides a vehicle for reflection about our lives, our loves and our losses.

Running through the narrative is the drama of the medical madness Fox recently experienced, which included his daily negotiations with the Parkinson's disease he's had since 1991 and a spinal cord issue that necessitated immediate surgery. His challenge to learn how to walk again, only to suffer a devastating fall, nearly caused him to ditch his trademark optimism and "get out of the lemonade business altogether".

Does he make it all of the way back? Listen to the audiobook.

An amazing writer. Laughed, cried, gasped.

Have been a fan of MJF since I was a teen watching Family Ties in the 80s. I read two of his books before and so loved his writing style - filled with humour and heart. This time I bought the audio book so I could listen while on the way to work. I loved having his voice in my ear telling me about his beautiful family, reflections on life and living with Parkinsons with newer complications. He really is a great actor, a brilliant anchor for his cause and a stunning writer.

disappointed

I had high expectations of this memoir, having heard several favourable comments about it, but I was disappointed as soon as I started listening to it. The narration killed it. I really struggled to understand what Michael was saying, even with the narration speed turned down a little. His speech impairment detracts greatly from what is otherwise a brave and frank sharing of his ups and downs in his struggle with PD. There is much in the narrative that I missed. Had he chosen a professional narrator, I’m sure this audio book would have been much more appealing to me.

Brilliant! Great listening.

I have always loved Michael J. Fox but after listening to this story, I admire him even more. Such a raw and honest account of his life, lived with tenacity and optimism. A very inspirational human being. His love and connection with his wife Tracy and their four children is beautiful. Keep fighting Mike Fox. You have an army of people behind you. I’m glad you have Gus too. Everyone needs the love of an animal.

Excellent

Loved listening to this. But needed to listen at .85 speed to better understand the narration. Recommend slowing it down.

Loved every minute

Michael J Fox was an icon for me during the 80’s & 90’s. He was bigger than anything and so talented. This story is filled with the same humour, confidence and boyish style that made him so endearing. He’s still Alex Keaton aceing his midterms, slicking back his hair and showing off, but he’s also extremely likeable in his vulnerability and fragility.

Loved it!

Beautifully written. Inspiring and heartfelt. An honest and insightful look into his world and the endless struggles with PD. Looked forward to my daily commute while listening. As others have said, I did have some difficulty understanding some parts, especially with external noise, but a quick skip back 30 seconds usually clarified.
