Editorial reviews

The tension creeps up almost imperceptibly in this dark tale from Charles Dickens thanks to narrator Anthony Donovan's tightly-controlled performance. The narrator of the story meets a signalman who appears to be frightened of his presence. After the narrator's reassurances, the signalman calms down and later confesses that he is being haunted by supernatural apparitions. Donovan gradually intensifies the eerie mood of the story, and his depiction of the characters' voices - from the narrator's eloquence to the signalman's rough tones - grounds it with a sense of realism.

A chilling collection of ghost stories containing Rats by M. R. James, The Raven and Berenice by Edgar Allan Poe, The Birthday of the Infanta by Oscar Wilde, A Tough Tussle by Ambrose Bierce and The Signalman by Charles Dickens.
