About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.'

Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party.

Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the Party.

In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love affair with a fellow worker, Julia, but soon discovers the true price of freedom is betrayal.

Capaldi’s narration is incredible. I enjoyed this highly, and this is definitely the version of the book to get.

I'm wondering whether George Orwell picked the topic up in his times, or whether he did sense it, or whether he was a visionary... maybe all of it is true. A capturing, unsettling story, that will undoubtly make you question what the reality of truth is. Picturesquely described and wonderfully narrated. A must hear in everyone's lifetime. This story can be life changing.

Unsettling Story about the dark human mind

I didn’t know that I needed Capaldi as my narrator, but boy I certainly do now! Such a nuanced and ingenious performance that it actually got me back reading 1984 word to word again. A deep and sad concept brought to life by a voice with ambiences and layers of its own, so addictive that lately I only have 2 modes in life: listening or thinking about listening to it. Cher to everybody who made this happening, and a big fat thank-you to the one brilliant brain who realises “Capaldi!”before we do.

Worth every penny, and more!

Peter Capaldi was the perfect choice of reader, lending himself naturally to both the cynicism and fleeting glimpses of optimism in the book. As for the book itself, well, you already know the story.

Chilling

Until this version, I've always struggled to feel fully immersed in this story. The story is so bleak my mind has always protectively shut off my emotions, whether I was reading the text, or watching the movie.

The ever brilliant Peter Capaldi succeeded in keeping me emotionally engaged throughout, so I have now finally felt the full impact of this story. Thank you.

Exceptional narration of this classic
