This title is the third and final book in the latest trilogy from R. A. Salvatore, which once again features his popular dark elf character Drizzt Do’Urden™. The original release of this title had the highest debut ever on The New York Times best seller list for a Salvatore title with Wizards of the Coast at number four. The title stayed in the top 20 for five weeks. Both of the previous titles in the series were also New York Times best sellers upon hardcover release, and the first title, The Thousand Orcs, hit the list upon mass-market release as well.

The feeling of adventure is back!
As usual Victor Bevine does an outstanding job as the narrator. That doesn't need to be explained. But this book was truly fantastic. The sense of adventure was lost after a certain point in the entire series, this was a fresh new start, with the same characters I grew to love. But it is not stale, not just a rehash. Each character has grown even more than before, and in a sense, it's like I'm back in the world of the Icewind Dale trilogy, where the five, no six, companions of the hall are gathered together to become a force to be reckoned with. I haven't been so happy to have them all fighting together again, no feelings holding them back from doing what they all truly love best. And their ability to adapt to everyone's new talents, and make the once godly companions of the hall, into an even more devastating force.
The action was pretty slow at the start, but the story was very well told and allowed for me to, once again, appreciate the writing talents of my still favorite Author of all time. The story left me wanting more, wanting the second book in this saga. It had set so many things in motion that I am all too excited to come into fruition. It seems as if Bob had taken into consideration the mishap he had with the transition saga, and decided to make the story fresh again. Even I had started to feel like the tales had begun to stale. That was until the great Ghost King, which focused less on story, and more on the action and desperation. Then came the neverwinter saga, there I had thought I couldn't be more impressed with his writing. Then I read the companions, and night of the hunter. Needless to say, he proved me wrong with Night of the Hunter.
Truly an astounding book, and worth the read.

Scimitars flashing along side deep introspection
The companions of the hall are both familiar and different. The story feels like walking down the same path again but there is no sense of boredom or déjà vu, more like what something drizzt himself would put it as “meeting up with old friends and finding out what is new”. It goes back to the roots of what drizzt’s stories are about with some predictable and surprising plot twist.

FInally back on track
It is about time. I have slogged my way through so many bad Drizzt books hoping that RA Salvaore would finally get back to the writing that he was known for. I suffered my way through the horrific and depressing Neverwinter series and the highly painful effects of the very bizarre stretch as Wizards of the Coast tormented us all by making the novels switch over to 4th edition. It was painful to watch and the poor novelists suffered with us and it showed. As a result the novels were disjointed and bizarre. It is about dang time that they got back to what was actually good to read. Bringing back the Companions of the Hall was smart and it worked. I am enjoying reading the Forgotten Realms novels again. It has been years since I have cared. A message to Wizards of the Coast....we are not George RR Martin people (we love his books but not the epic waits). We don't care about your "vision" of what the novels *should* be. Give us, the fans, the gamers, what the heck we want. We want Bruenor splitting the skulls of matron mothers. We want tales of the houses of Menzoberanzen. We want Regis eating, thieving and getting into trouble. We want Cattie Bri slinging out rough dwarven slang. We want enchanted swords, Horns of Valhalla, fireballs, the Harpells, dragons, mind flayers, and Aegis Fang.
In short, don't torture us with game mechanics between your edition switches. It hampers good writing. We want good stories with characters we love and we want them one after the other. Your vapid attempt to force us into reading the swill that has come out since 4th edition has been painful to all of us.
Thank God RA Salvatore is back. Thank God he brought back our friends we grew up with.
Now lets go watch the 29th house attack the 14th while allying with the 21st. We like it. Keep it coming.

Great Story, Sets Us Up For More, Reader Struggles
Any additional comments?
I can forgive the slight mispronunciation of some of the fantasy names, and commend how well the reader does with almost all of them. But a few normal English words drove me crazy. Bade does not sound the same as bad. And there are two ways to say live...the wrong one was used at least once. The reader was otherwise fantastic, brought the story alive, and the story holds up with old school Salvatore books while embracing the recent past, sometimes in unexpected ways...sometimes exactly how you expect.

A throwback with sprinkles on top
Salvatore's first post-Sundering novel is a grand recapturing of the magic contained in the early his early Drizzt saga novels. The Companions of the Hall are reunited, without much of the heaviness present prior to their first "deaths".
Salvatore brilliantly blends the greatest parts of the Neverwinter crew with the excitement and explosive action of the older Drizzt books. He even manages to throw in bits that readers of the Spider Queen quintet will appreciate. The newel elf political intrigue is prominently displayed and seems to serves to set up the rest of the trilogy. As an avid realms reader/listener, this novel has quickly become one of my all time favorites.
Victor Bevine has done an amazing job with the entire Drizzt series and, once again, fully immerses listeners into the Forgotten Realms setting and the lives of the characters involved.

The narrator really wants you to enjoy the book!
What did you like most about Night of the Hunter?
The story was very interesting and the narrator is excellent and really does some great voices.
What other book might you compare Night of the Hunter to, and why?
The Neverwinter Trilogy.
What about Victor Bevine’s performance did you like?
Each of the voices he does is distinct and thus you do forget that the narrator is a man not a woman, elf or dwarf!
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
