Publisher's Summary

After his father’s untimely death, Nicholas Nickleby is charged with supporting his mother and sister as he finds his way in the world. Broke, Nickleby goes to his maleficent uncle Ralph for help. The ruthless and resentful businessman appeases his nephew with a thankless position at a grim orphans’ home. Nickleby is swiftly conspired against, and the young man is forced to leave his family and London behind. Accompanied by colorful eccentrics and a rogues’ gallery of villains, Nickleby is tested at every turn on his journey home and to self-discovery.

With its dark wit, bighearted romance, and rage against the cruelties of Victorian England, Nicholas Nickleby is one of Charles Dickens’s most unforgettable and exuberant epics.

Critic Reviews

Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award

"Nicholas Boulton is simply a masterful narrator. His tour-de-force performance of this Dickens classic shows the full complement of his vocal ability: He does all manner of English accents, from Yorkshire farmer to clerk to the upper class; he dexterously captures age, gender, and geographical idiosyncrasies. In a novel teaming with vicious characters (Wackford Squeers and Ralph Nickleby being the top two) who are opposed to the heroic Nicholas and his sister, Kate, Boulton quickly changes tone and tenor to give meaning to every utterance. Dickens's gifts as a storyteller are well served by Boulton. He smoothly renders the author's sometimes monumental descriptions, monologues, and dialogues. In this age of binging, here is an audiobook that can be listened to and enjoyed over time." (AudioFile Magazine)

Dickens classic, beautifully voiced

I've been reading Dickens novels in chronological order and have already read Nicholas Nickelby a few times, and was already aware of how charming and lovable this moral tale is. Hearing it as an audio book narrated and performed by actor Nick Boulton has taken my appreciation further as it's so wonderfully delivered, with the characters and scenes are so vividly brought to life. It's a pleasure to hear the fine language, to be charmed by the Cheerable Brothers and Tim Linkenwater, to know the sneer of Ralph Nickelby and discover the depths of Smike and Newman Noggs - all such fascinating characters so well voiced. I'm so impressed that I've given it a second 'reading' and hope that Mr Boulton will undertake more of Dickens's work as I'm sure he'll do it justice!
