Publisher's Summary

Under the streets of London there's a world most people could never even dream of: a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, and pale girls in black velvet. Richard Mayhew is a young businessman who is about to find out more than he bargained for about this other London. A single act of kindness catapults him out of his safe and predictable life and into a world that is at once eerily familiar and yet utterly bizarre.

There's a girl named Door, an Angel called Islington, an Earl who holds Court on the carriage of a Tube train, a Beast in a labyrinth, and dangers and delights beyond imagining.... And Richard, who only wants to go home, is to find a strange destiny waiting for him below the streets of his native city.

"Prose that dances and dazzles.... Gaiman describes the indescribable." (Susanna Clarke)

Very disappointing

When I first got this audiobook I was really excited that it was narrated by the author. I thought it was going to be the best reading ever! Unfortunately, it ended up being one of the worst readings I've experienced on audible. The narration was boring and felt slow, and in some parts made me cringe. The author just isn't a very good actor.
I also didn’t enjoy the story at all and thought about returning it many times. But I just kept hoping that something would happen and the end would be worth it so I forced myself to keep listening. I found the characters simple, boring and unlikable. I kept waiting for them to develop or change but it just never happened. The crazy fantasy world and its magic also felt cheap and lazy. To many events in the book were resolved by some unexpected magic or chance happening that it became hard to feel any kind of worry or interest about what was happening.
Overall I gave the audiobook 2 starts instead of one for the performance because I did enjoy his accent. I also gave the book 2 stars instead of one for the story because although I didn’t like it over all there were a couple good moments and plots twists.

Outstanding

This is the best fantasy story I have encountered in years, possibly ever. Neil Gaiman has a wonderful way with words. He also has a beautiful voice and his stories are rich and meaningful. I don't often write reviews but this book deserves the recognition.

Much better reading it yourself

I love Neil Gainman’s novels and think I own a copy of most of his published works. The audio version of Good Omens was fantastic, so I held high hopes for the audio version of this novel and was so disappointed. Mr Gainman (as the narrator in this instance) speaks with quite a soft pitch but when it’s combined with his love of downward inflection, I struggled to hear what he was saying when listening in my car (even with the volume set high). When a listener is struggling to hear what is being said, it’s hard to stay interested for long. I still love the story, just not the audio version.

Another gem from Gaiman

I really enjoyed this one. A great storyline with vivid main characters and fantastical beings throughout.
Neil Gaiman is the perfect narrator for his own stories. His rich voice brings the characters and the scenarios within the story to life.

Alright, not as good as others by the author

Wasn't as good as the reviews. I've read his big books & been more than satisfied. This one just didn't do it for me.

Great adventure story

Neil Gaiman weaves another fabulous tale full of intrigue, magic and thrills. The story was A+ and it was pretty special having the author narrating it however I found the music and the effects annoying I know they were added for quirkiness and to give a certain feel to those parts of the story but for me they were detracting. If it weren't for that I would have given a solid 5 stars.

Exceptional Quirk

Gaiman reading Gaiman is probably the best way to experience a novel by Gaiman. I loved every moment of it's whimsical quirk and beautifully woven characters.
