Publisher's Summary

A classic Marple mystery, read by Emilia Fox.

In utter disbelief Miss Marple read the letter addressed to her from the recently deceased Mr Rafiel—an acquaintance she had met briefly on her travels. Recognising in Miss Marple a natural flair for justice, Mr Rafiel had left instructions for her to investigate a crime after his death. The only problem was, he had failed to tell her who was involved or where and when the crime had been committed. It was most intriguing.

Classic Christie.

An absolute cracker with superb narration from Emilia Fox. First class entertainment from the Queen of Crime.

Brilliant

Nothing like the television version of Nemesis. The book was wonderful and had me guessing to the end. Narration by Emelia Fox was superb. In fact she and Richard E Grant (who narrated The Moving Finger) are my favourite audio book narrators. Wish Mr Grant would narrate Murder at the Vicarage as I can’t stand current version.

Delightfully unabridged

Well narrated, and so good to hear a properly read book, including the wonderfully dated attitudes (so unPC).

I’ve never understood why people keep wanting to modernise or update books. They reflect their time, right or wrong, and cutting out any iffy bits, or updating the language, just makes a mockery of it all. Part of the ‘fun’ of reading/listening to books is seeing their reflection of ‘that’ time, ‘that’ moment.

Well done, and worth listening to. Miss Marple at her best.

Just a bit too long...

Firstly, if you are thinking of getting this after seeing the Geraldine McEwen version, beware that it bares no resemblance to the original story.
I like this one of AC as it shows Miss M having to do a bit more digging than usual. Having seen the tv original and listened to the bbc radio versions, I decided to give the full book a go.
It's well written and holds your interest. The two downsides are that for starters, it's at least an hour too long. There are elements that are just over-repetitive, as if the author thought you needed to be reminded about how the story starts all the time and the overdescription of other elements - you don't need over 10 minutes on flowers!. I have a couple of Marple and Poirot and they tend to be 6/7 hours rather than this which is 9.
Secondly, the story is based around the assault and/or rapes of young women. The attitude towards the women is terrible . Even at the time of writing I'd still say the opinions were out dated. They are very harsh but I don't think they should be left out, because sadly, some of the views in this are still held by people and perhaps that is something to be aware of too.
Finally, after having to return one narrated by Emilia Fox (Murder is announced) and keeping one (4.50 from.padington), I honestly didn't know how this one would go. I was pleasantly surprised as there are a lot of characters and you can tell who is who quite easily. There are a few that grate a little but overall, the narration works well.

Mismatch between narrator and main character

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I couldn't finish this audio version, unfortunately, due to the narration. The book itself is one of my favourites.

What other book might you compare Nemesis to, and why?

This is a Miss Marple book in which Miss Marple herself is quite prominent as a character, and where we follow her actions, and where she's self-conscious of being older and frailer. Other Miss Marple books like this would be "At Bertram's Hotel" or "The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side".

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I think Emilia Fox is a terrific narrator, but her MIss Marple voice really didn't work for me. She's one of my favourite narrators for Agatha Christie stories with younger protagonists, like in "They Came to Baghdad", "Seven Dials Mystery", "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?" and others, but for me her Miss Marple voice sounded like a shaky parody of an old lady. I prefer the older version narrated by Joan Hickson, which is amazing. And Stephanie Cole does a very good Miss Marple as well.

Could you see Nemesis being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Certainly. I have seen several. Joan Hickson is my favourite Miss Marple by far, and the TV dramatisation with her is fabulous.

Any additional comments?

I wanted to love this, but I didn't. I'll keep buying the non-Marple Emilia Fox Agatha Christie's, and the Joan Hickson Miss Marple books.

Trigger Warning: Victim Blaming

Any additional comments?

Really appalling amounts of victim blaming. I mean I know its an old book, from the point of view of even older people but theres some really shocking sentiments from quite a few men in the story. This is just a warning because it took me badly by surprise.

Its still one of the better Mrs Marple stories, and one of the few I've come across that actually deals with her perspective. She can be such an all-knowing all-seeing background character in some books its nice to see her stumped.

Terrible narrator

Narrator can't do basic accents, which is weird for an actor. Had to skip a chapter when it became apparent that a particularly grating voice was going to be used a lot.
Book is a bit slow to start, but good once it gets going. See if you can download it with a different narrator.

Emilia Fox makes this book live

I’ve read this book before and remembered some of it. But it was bought to life with Ms Fox interpretation of Jane Marple.
Just exactly how I heard her voice in my head when I read the book years ago
As usual with Christie the story twists and turns and you think you’ve solved the crime and then find you haven’t
Very good version

Miss Marple at her best.

The best Miss Marple story,I think. Beautifully performed by Emilia Fox. Will listen again, definitely.

Would have been better without the accents

Classic AC but not for everyone this book has a lot of old fashioned prejudice towards foreign nationals and a lot of victim blaming for people who may have undergone S. Assault. The book itself is good but the narration is terrible at times. If the narrator hadn't tried accents and just read the book then it would have been so much better, she has a wonderful normal reading voice just not accents.

A somewhat disappointing experience

I’m revisiting AC via Audible. So far,I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the Poirots I have listened to, superbly performed by Hugh Fraser. Perhaps I’ve been spoilt by Mr Fraser because any other AC narrator seems to fall short. I can’t fault Ms Fox’s narration of Nemesis, but somehow I just couldn’t connect to it. I felt I was watching from the sidelines rather than being immersed in the experience. It all felt rather dull and I found myself longing for it to end. Others appear to have thoroughly enjoyed it, so perhaps it’s a case of ‘me’ rather than anyone else being to blame. Hopefully the next Miss Marple I listen to will be a better experience.
