Spisovatel se inspiroval životem velkého světového mima Jean-Baptisty Gaspara Deburaua (1796–1846), jenž si vysloužil titul největšího z pierotů. Autor popisuje Kašparovo dětství a mládí strávené v kočovné společnosti artistů, léta čekání na úspěch i dobu triumfu a uznání. V Paříži dosáhl Deburau po mnoha letech nesmírné popularity a milovali ho obyčejní diváci i kulturní elita tehdejší Francie. Román však není životopisem v pravém slova smyslu, ale především psychologickou studií o cestě umělce za jeho snem a poetickou básní o divadle a lidském životě.
