Da Johan efter 40 år som kulturjournalist netop er gået på pension, får han konstateret kræft og får at vide, at han har et halvt år tilbage at leve i.
Johan vil have sin kone, Mai, til at love at hjælpe ham med at dø, når han selv ikke vil leve mere. Mai, der er børnelæge, vægrer sig i første omgang, men giver ham senere det løfte at hjælpe ham med at dø, når tiden er inde.
Men hvornår er den det? Da tidspunktet nærmer sig, ændrer perspektivet sig for både Mai og Johan. For den døende er tiden måske en helt anden. Johan erkender, at livet blot er noget forbigående, mens døden er den kroniske tilstand, der følger efter. Det haster vel ikke så meget?
