Publisher's Summary
Lovelace Manor has a famous past...but when a historian becomes history at its annual open day, amateur sleuth Eve Mallow is on the case!
Everyone in Saxford St Peter flocks to Lovelace Sunday, the festival celebrating the romantic history of beautiful Lovelace Manor. This year will be even more exciting, as famous TV historian Cammie Harington is planning a spectacular stunt with a hot-air balloon for her new show.
Eve Mallow jumps at the chance to volunteer–it’s a great people-watching opportunity. But she soon realizes there is no love lost between Cammie and the family that owns the manor...so why did Cammie agree to come?
When Cammie’s hot-air balloon tumbles from the sky, Eve feels sure this is no accident. Alongside dachshund Gus, she sets to work investigating the mystery, piecing together all the odd things she’s seen and heard.
Could the killer be discreet Diana, lady of the manor, who fell out with Cammie years ago? Or Diana’s dashing brother Sebastian, whose dark secret Cammie knew? Why was the loyal gardener following Cammie around? And had Cammie uncovered something explosive about the manor’s past, as she claimed?
When someone breaks into Cammie’s cottage and a priceless Lovelace heirloom goes missing, Eve is sure she’s on the right track...but can she solve the case, before the killer brings her crashing down?
A completely gripping English cozy mystery, perfect for fans of Frances Evesham, J.R. Ellis, and Betty Rowlands.

Another fantastic story from Clare Chase
I think this is my favourite book so far out of the series for a number of reasons. First the death toll was good and different, second there was more of Viv who I love as a character, third the twist was unforeseen and very good. Fourthly even though the final act was the usual situation of Eve getting cornered by the killer this one had a refreshing twist.
Although I would like to see Clare move away from this formula and do something else with the final act. I've said this before, I would like to see her branch out with ideas of the conclusion. It would of been great if Viv had been there and we saw another side of her and she shouted at the murderer and actually went for them. Eve would have a new found respect for Viv and this would be great banter about Viv saving Eve's life in future books.
I would like to see the murderer(s) just try to escape rather than attack, or their reason for murder is justified and we actually have sympathy for the killer and actually want them to get away with murders!
Or here is a refreshing idea the killer actually gives themselves up after brutally murdering the person's that wronged them once Eve discovers who the murderer is and the killer is actually civil and says something like "they deserved to die, it was my mission to do to them what they did to me and my family."
I am pleased the relationship with Robin is growing, but again I would like to see more with him and Eve working together and spending quality time together away from the village, I would also like to see more of Eve's twins and the two decent detectives.
Actually thinking about it the detective with a chip on his shoulder should be brought down a peg. It should now be apparent after eight books that Eve is a great investigator. I would like to see the police commissioner contact Eve and request her assistance and works with the police. Viv gets excited and acts like Cagney and Lacey with Eve and the police, giving the detective a hard time and him conceding that Eve is very good.
