About this listen

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of My Story by Steven Gerrard, read by Michael Ryan.

Steven Gerrard is the former captain of Liverpool football team and of the England national football team and is the only player ever to have scored in a FA cup final, a league cup final, a UEFA cup final and a champion's league final. His entire career, since 1998, has been spent at Anfield with Liverpool.

In this audiobook he charts his full playing career, shedding light on the defining games, his life off the pitch as well as the players and managers he's encountered. Explosive, controversial and searingly honest, this will be the last word from an era-defining player.

It made me feel like I was right there, in Liverpool, with him. For a kiwi Liverpool supporter like me, this was brilliant.

Brilliant

Stevie manages to brilliantly convey his emotional roller coaster ride through his career.

I'll be listening to snippets of it again with my football mad boy.

I wrongly thought it would be boring.

If you could sum up My Story in three words, what would they be?

Inspiring, classy, captivating

Who was your favorite character and why?

Stevie, obviously. This is a tremendous insight into what it's like to sacrifice everything to chase a dream and what it's like riding that roller coaster when you get there

Which character – as performed by Michael Ryan – was your favourite?

Michael Ryan reads the story well and in the right way to capture what Stevie was trying to get across

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The world may never see a man like this ever again.

A great book, even for neutrals

Narrator was brilliant. Almost thought it was Stevey at times! There was a lot of describing whole games which I felt was happening too often. I was really hoping for more dressing room insights and gossip from his career than was mentioned, especially compared to what I've read of Alex Ferguson's book. Of what there was though, it was fantastic and helped to explain things that I didn't understand as a supporter at the time. The role of Steve Peters in particular was fascinating, as were the team talks by various managers, Stevies role in trying to lure players to Liverpool and his family insights. I finish with only good memories of Stevie. My favourite Liverpool player and Footballing idol.

PS the narration of some of the chants are absolutely hilarious.
Esp the "Steve Gerrard Gerrard" song. And luckily for us it appears numerous times!!!

He's big and he's ****ing hard

Gerard seems like a solid guy and great pro. Maybe that's why the book is a bit bland. Not much insight more dates games etc
