About this listen
Protecting him is my duty, but falling for him could be my undoing.
I’ve spent five years burying my past, leaving behind the violence and bloodshed of my former life as a Bratva enforcer. Now, I’m just Luca—the quiet guy who keeps his head down, working security for a professional hockey team. I don’t get close to anyone, and I definitely don’t let anyone get close to me.
But then I’m assigned to protect Max Ryan, the team’s star defenseman, and everything changes. He's my obsession. My crush. Max is everything I shouldn’t want. Charismatic and stubborn, he’s got a knack for finding trouble, and now he’s got a target on his back. The last thing I need is to be drawn into his world, where old loyalties and deadly secrets collide with new, dangerous desires.
As much as I try to keep things professional, Max has a way of breaking through my defenses. But when a shadow from my past threatens to destroy him and everything I’ve built, I’ll do whatever it takes to keep him safe. Even if it means confronting the darkness I thought I’d left behind—and risking everything, including my heart.

When it comes to the whole mafia and hocky combined storyline, I thought I would have an issue with it because it's just not something I think should ever be blended but I actually enjoyed it. Although I didn't really find it 'dark' but did enjoy the whole player/bodyguard dynamic.
I did love both Luca and Max but the overall plot lacked and the end felt a bit rushed. I mean the very last part felt like it was just chucked in as if it was the cherry on top but it wasn't. Also all the other characters from their other books just causally thrown in there for a scene.. ick
Also did someone say Teddy Hamilton & Joe Arden... yes pleaseeee!!

Max is the captain of a professional hockey team. There have been threats made against him so one of the security team has been assigned to him for protection - that lucky job falls to Luca - the hot bodyguard (secret ex mafia) who has a secret obsession and crush on Max.
So much happens in this book! My head is swimming with everything that went down in this book, so much to think about.
This is definitely a dark romance, so make sure you read the CW. This story is spicy and dramatic and focuses on the hurt / comfort of both these characters. Both Max and Luca have past trauma, Max especially has trouble with this past and as a result tries to deny what he truly wants. Luca kind of bulldozes his way into Max’s life and their ‘bodyguard with benefits’ situationship becomes all consuming and they both end up learning how to love.
Their relationship is definitely not conventional but I kind of dug their f-ed up normality at the end, I mean when you fall in love with someone in the mafia, you know what you are getting in to.
This one was definitely different to the standard hockey books I’ve read and I think it’s worth the read if you are looking for something a little darker and not at all low angst featuring a whole mafia angle to a hockey trope. It’s a great mix.
It is a standalone but there are a couple of breadcrumbs in there that there may be another book on the horizon.
Ps. The audio narration was fantastic.

But it was so strange. Worded very matter of fact, not enough detail, jumping from one scene to the next in a jolting way. Waaaay too much going on and nothing explains properly! From the Bratva links to the crappy family situation, nothing was delved into. Both narrator’s are usually great, but Joe Arden in particular was terrible in this one. His cadence and lack of inflection made it like he was reading a shopping list!
Disappointed I spent money on this one and don’t recommend.
One of the weirdest books I’ve listened too…
