Publisher's Summary

Before he was an Elfin Lord - before he even joined that secret group of Mages - Jamie Riley was a Mage recruited by the FBI and the Office of Supernatural Policing and Investigation. A new-minted Inspector sent into one of the most complicated supernatural regions in the country: Los Angeles.

The rest of OSPI’s LA team has grown comfortable with allowing politics and pragmatism to decide which cases they pursue, which criminals they charge - but when Jamie’s investigation suggests that a pillar of the supernatural community has killed in cold blood, he will let nothing get in the way of getting the murderer.

Not even his career.

A bite size masterpiece as usual

This series is my absolute favorite. I was bummed as it appears Glynn Stewart is only going to make 4 of the main series books. I jumped for joy when I saw this one pop up. Masterful as ever. When you pair a great series with the all time best narrator out there? Brilliance.

Liked it and think I may start the series

Overall found this mini intro to be very entertaining. Enough so that I will want to get the first book in the series and try it out.

This was a joy to read.

Murder by magic did exactly what I expected, it introduced me to the onset world. While true it was one my "free" Audible books. I purchased it anyway, to me it was that good and really needs to be in the collection.
I have purchased book one of this series, to Serve And Protect. I am really looking forward to enjoying it and the three that follow.
I support my authors by voting with my dollars. Glynn Stewart is one that I am happy to support this way both in his writings and Audible releases.
Ray Porter seemed to be the the perfect choice for narrating the story. Kudos for a job well done.

Joe Friday urban fantasy between MIB & Nightwise

If the goal of this prequel was to sell me on this series, then it only marginally succeeded. I will wishlist book 1 and wait for a daily deal. I like modern day urban fantasy police procedurals and Sam Spade / Constantine types of main characters.

In this novella, after a rather abrupt recruitment/training segment, we join Jamie on his first assignment in L.A.’s hidden paranormal crime fighting unit. This lacked the comedy and style of MIB, the pulpy guns-N-action of the Monster Hunters series, or the grit and black magic mojo of the Nightwise series. Jamie felt more like Dragnet’s Joe Friday... and not the Tom Hanks/Dan Akroyd version.

There’s not a lot of detail in the characters, setting, or magical world (which features crystals and use of the third eye). If the cover art is right, Jamie’s a middle aged white guy... but the only other feature of him is his Joe Friday “do the right thing at all costs” attitude. The mini-murder mystery is by-the-book and did not hold my interest. My mind started wandering in boredom as I puzzled over giving rookie Jamie a murder investigation as his first assignment. Oh, and speaking of wandering thoughts, the author really likes variations of the word thaumaturgy, which worries me for the full length book. Hmm, perhaps only if the daily deal is for $3.

Great with good back story.

Really enjoyed the breakout story. However Jamie's voice and narrator's voice swapped places at some point.

Intriguing premise

I liked the idea of a supernatural police force. They went too far making the captain disagreeable. She would have twirled a villain mustache if she had one. Why would you have someone resentful of magic be in charge? The meaty part of the story was over quickly and the last half hour wasn't enough to make up for the slow progress of the rest of the book. I can't imagine spending more time with some of these characters.
