About this Audible Original
From podcasts and documentaries to online forums, true crime is booming. But as one Audible editor and self-professed crime obsessive observes, the genre is being pulled in new and different directions along with a changing social landscape. She wanted to know: Can we ethically engage in true crime as real concerns surface around the crimes, victims, and systemic issues that directly impact the humans we are hearing about? Where are the most sensitive and original voices in true crime turning their attention? And how can we use our primal fascination with the dark side of human nature as a force for good?
Listen in on this exclusive conversation with a host of experts from the true crime landscape, featuring original interviews with the following guests:
Attica Locke, author, Heaven, My Home
Billy Jensen, author, Chase Darkness with Me
Emily Martinez, executive producer, Finding Tess
Jim Clemente, creator, Call Me God
Marcus Parks, creator, Last Podcast on the Left
Michele Josue, director, Happy Jail
Maureen O’Connell, narrator, Call Me God
Rachel McCarthy James, author, The Man from the Train
Rachel Monroe, author, Savage Appetites
Sarah Weinman, author, The Real Lolita
Scott Brick, narrator, In Cold Blood
Vanessa Harris, senior director, Audible Content Partnerships

Love the deep dive with true crime heavy hitters!
I never thought I would call myself a true crime fan, but with the age of prestige true crime upon us (whatever that means), I've surprised myself by getting immersed in narratives like Mindhunters, Serial, The Staircase, OJ: Made in America, Twisted, A Serial Killer's Daughter, and more. I love how this piece looks at where true crime is right now as a movement and asks really interesting questions about where it should go next. I'm super intrigued by the part of the conversation that talks about the mental health toll on true crime investigators and journalists. And check out that star-studded cast! Attica Locke is my new fave <3 I also loved hearing Scott Brick talk about what it was like to narrate In Cold Blood. Thank you for the thought-provoking listen, complete with creepy Americana-esque sound design!

A whole new way of looking at true crime
This short, podcast-like listen opened my eyes to true crime’s problematic past and how the genre can move forward in a more empathetic way — one that looks at the victims’ stories and those of the wrongfully convicted. The many voices throughout will bring a new perspective to true crime fans everywhere.

Synthesis Success
I am proud Audible put this out. Michelle McNamara & B. Jensen changed the game, and this addendum to their books is confirms an ethical mission that is otherwise not that "popular." And yes, I agree, Finding Tess is shit... & misses the point.

Quick Listen for True Crime Fans
Kat talked to several people involved in true crime and had a little bit of information about the true crime genre. Overall I thought it had some good information. Considering this is free, I think it's worth the listen. I could see Kat fleshing this out more and making another Audible program that is more comprehensive than this is.
