Publisher's Summary

When Jo Breen uses her divorce settlement to buy a neglected property in the Byron Bay hinterland, she is hoping for a tree change, and a blossoming connection to the land of her Aboriginal ancestors. What she discovers instead is sharp dissent from her teenage daughter, trouble brewing from unimpressed white neighbours and a looming Native Title war between the local Bundjalung families. When Jo unexpectedly finds love on one side of the Native Title divide she quickly learns that living on country is only part of the recipe for the Good Life.

Told with humour and a sharp satirical eye, Mullumbimby is a modern story set against an ancient land.

Exceptional. Powerful. Moving.

This was an exquisite book. I absolutely loved it. I'd recommend it over and over to anyone. As I am a white Australian male, the insights gained through this masterpiece can not really be expressed in words, except that I am floored and so grateful.

Listening to this audiobook opened my heart and wrenched many gasping tears from my centre, often sadness but mostly joy and awe.

I just love Melissa Lucashenko's use of language. She seamlessly weaves Bandjalang words and phrases into a deceptively simple style, so by the end of the book you know quite a bit of 'lingo'. I found the structure of the whole thing to be perfectly sophisticated and truly inspiring.

The narrating was also absolutely on point. How Tasma Walton was able to get through reading this incredible, emotional book without crying I will never know. There must have been takes where she balled her eyes out.
I thought I might read it to my girlfriend but found out quickly that there would be no hope of that!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Incredible

I wouldn’t usually pick up a book like this, I generally favour lighthearted easy reads, however this was a book club book so I gave it a go. SO GLAD I DID. It was absolutely beautiful - so descriptive, and I loved the authentic feel that you got from so hearing the traditional Aboriginal language. The characters were all loveable, and Tasma was an amazing narrator. Couldn’t fault it - incredible!

Moving, illuminating, beautiful and uplifting

This is one of the best audio books I've listened to for a while. The writing is sublime, so evocative of a very beautiful part of Australia. The story is gripping and moving, funny and piognant, important and passionate. The narration bloody excellent! So glad I listened to this, the last hour kept me up til 2am... a sign of a wonderful tale.
