Good retirement yarn

Very good performance, I liked the connection with Homer & the Greek isles. Although a bit Shirley valentinish

So true to life

I loved that the story covered so many of the aspects of a couple venturing into retirement with what they thought were the same ideas and values only to find that they were so different. I loved that they both enabled the other to find their way and to find out that "the grass is never greener" !! so relatable and enjoyable

skipped through the last half

I really thought she'd carve her own path. It ended up being quite a let down and as for her husband, what a wet blanket he was. very unliveable as a character, to whom I never warmed. started out with such promise, ended predictably and safely back in the nuclear family model. bah humbug!

Excellent story

I loved every minute of this story. It’s a realistic tale of the retirement and family situation of two very capable GPs starting retirement going through the ups & downs that needed to be navigated and working out how to find what each needed in their lives and that together they could achieve it despite a bumpy start. Beautifully narrated.

Retirement and Invisibility

I really enjoyed this story, it related to issues in my current life. I related to the medical jargon as income from a medical background. I felt it covered issues of marriage and retirement well and especially highlighted the invisibility of old age as a woman. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audible version.

Great narration improved plot!

Amusing but poignant tale of the human condition post career & retirement age. Will a marriage survive after 40 yrs?

A tad drawn out after the start but a sea change to Greece and coming face to face with a tempting god, Dion, the sailor, reignites not only Heather (like the bush!) but the reader as well.

The crystal waters of the islands hold historical significance through Homer’s stories and, more significantly, memories of migrant/refugee boats.

A happy ending ties the plot, a marriage and family together after a gap year experience for all!

A feel-good story that many readers will enjoy; specifically those with a medical background, are at retirement age and perhaps facing new challenges in their familial relationships, particularly in communication.

Husband Allen needs a bomb! Quite the unlikeable character and Heather, though rather comical, was annoying at times. I got quite sick of her voice.

It’s only her inner thoughts that narrates this plot which was disappointing as the other characters (Allen, Dennis, Tilly, Sarah...) would have added so much more.

From this solo POV the story fell flat in length… far too long!
It required more editing in the middle. Thx to narrator for enlivening the plot!!

Bland

I'm usually a big Joanna Nell fan (I mean, Mrs Henry Parker oh my goodness ♡) but this one just missed the mark for me. I didn't see any connection between Heather and Alan, their relationship was very stale.
Why is the book called Mrs Winterbottom when she is a doctor, and the entire book discusses the fact she is a doctor?
I got a bit fed up listening to all the medical jargon (and yes, I know that's a JN thing and I didn't mind it in the other books). It was over the top in this book.
Performed well.
