Publisher's Summary
A duke’s governess, a gentleman scientist, and a castle full of flowers is the perfect setting for a summer romance.
As the new governess to the duke's family, Alice Sharpe must learn to control her impulsive ways. Employment in the duke’s household is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and could mean living in comfort the rest of her days. Unfortunately, her first encounter with the duke's neighbor, a handsome scientist, proves she may not be ready for the austere role of governess.
Rupert Gardiner has one goal: to have his work in botany published by the Royal Society. He is fortunate that his neighbor, the duke, believes in him and enlists Rupert to make a record of all the flora on the castle grounds. But Miss Sharpe’s spontaneity and continual appearance during his work is a rather annoying distraction. At least, that’s what he tells himself.
While Alice struggles to adapt to her new role, constantly battling who she is and the person she believes she must become, she cannot help but admire Rupert’s intelligence and focus. The more often they fall in together, the more her admiration deepens. But could a gentleman such as he ever fall in love with the governess?
As the first stand-alone novel in a new series by author Sally Britton, this story begins the Clairvoir Castle romances. This is a lighthearted series set in the Regency period.

Sweet, Gentle and Delightful!!!
A new series from the lovely Sally Britton, you ask. Why yes! And it starts out quite lovely if I do say so myself! I've been so excited for this one since the author first announced that she was working on it! Yay! It's been fun to read some of the background for her writing it and her inspiration for Clairvoir Castle. Go sign up for her newsletter if you're interested and like to know the background info. I love learning about those aspects of books and what brought an author to choose the story and characters and setting.
Alice Sharpe has been passed around amongst her relatives since she was little, after the passing of both of her parents. She finally is at a point where they no longer want to care for her and she sets out to work as a governess. Alice's character was very sweet. I loved watching her interactions with the family she was working with, especially the children in her role as their governess. Even her interactions with the older children who don't need a governess anymore, was very sweet. I always have hope (I know, we're years past the Regency Era but I can't help thinking what it was like) that not all governesses were treated horribly or as invisible and somebody to be ignored and belittled. I always hope that there was a good relationship for some of them and that they were respected and cared for. I know, it wasn't that way for all of them but like I said, I have hope that there were more than not.
Rupert Gardiner is an entomologist working with the Duke of Clairvoir Castle. And can I just say that his and Alice's first meeting was quite a debacle. It gave me a good chuckle. Then after the debacle their next interaction was to be paired up for dinner. Ha! Oh, the awkwardness. But like a true lady, Alice stands tall and behaves with perfect decorum.
Rupert and Alice have a sweet and gentle relationship that was so fun to watch build. There was no pretense and games. Although, Alice has some reservations that Rupert didn't understand until she explained her past and her employment. It'll make sense if you read it. I loved how they found commonalities and interests and how that led them to build a friendship that eventually lead to them falling in love.
There are a few hinderances in their relationship but I loved how those were resolved. It's just a sweet and enjoyable story. I listened to the audiobook while working around the house and it was so delightful. The narrator, Jessica Elisa Boyd, has such a soothing voice. I've listened to several audiobooks with her as narrator and I love how she brings the stories to life. She was a great pick for narrating this one.
I'm looking forward to Emma's story next. I can't wait to see how it all plays out!

Finding the nature of love
Alice and Rupert are completely endearing and watching their story unfold was deeply satisfying. The author takes the ordinary and turns it into extraordinary. A lovely narrator with all the voices perfect, including the supporting cast. This author never disappoints, but I was especially drawn to these two.

You can’t go wrong with a Sally Britton Regency
Story: 5 stars
I sincerely enjoyed this story! For a moment, when the governess entered the Duchess’ employ, I was worried that the author would attempt to match the governess with the Duke and Duchess’ eligible son. That would have literally ruined the story for me.
Instead, I was delighted that the resident untitled gentleman was going to be the romantic interest for our downtrodden governess.
She definitely protects her heart against anyone of the male variety, but also does a fabulous job teaching the children of the family.
The Duke and his family were unusual in their caring attitude, but I found it endearing (if slightly on the fictional side of historical fiction).
Mr. Gardiner has delightful comparisons in his mind of women and Alice to various insects. Actually, his interest in cataloging insects is authentic. The Royal Society was a real institution and the 1800’s were time of great excitement about the natural sciences.
The entire book was delightful and I was pleased to see that it was the first in a series! Another reviewer mentioned that Sally Britton is an automatic purchase and I couldn’t agree more! Especially when teamed up with Jessica Eliza Boyd as her narrator!
Narration: 5 stars
Jessica Eliza Boyd is marvelous! She has a number of different “voices” in her arsenal and she truly acts the parts of the various characters. She creates an atmosphere with her voice acting. She’s truly talented!

Sweet and unique
I don’t often think of entomologists being romantic (truth be told, I don’t often think of entomologists 😂). And Mr. Gardiner is not super romantic — but I liked him better for it! Alice Sharp is one of my favorite of Sally Britton’s characters — she is quiet and sweet but will fight for someone she believes in. 5/5 stars, would highly recommend

Lovely and engaging Regency Romance!
I highly recommend this new series by Sally Britton!! This novel was a sweet start to the Clairvoir Castle Romances.
Alice is uncertain yet determined to succeed at her position as the new governess in the Duke's household. Rupert's goal is to successfully catalogue the plants and insects on the Duke's estate. Their relationship and care for each other blooms and unfolds naturally and realistically.
I was charmed and captivated by this lovely and engaging Regency Romance. I enjoyed the narration, the setting, the characters, and the pace of the plot. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!

Another great read by Sally Britton!
I so enjoyed the characters in this book! I’m already looking forward to reading the next book in the series. The character development even in the supporting characters was so well done. It felt like you were there in the story with them. I also really liked that this story was written from two points of view, from both Alice’s and Rupert’s.
I also thought the narration of this book was very well done. I’ve listened to a few stories by Jessica Elise Boyd and I’ve not been disappointed. I always find her narrative style is in my opinion excellent for both male and female parts alike and her voice and pitch is a pleasure to listen to.
I thoroughly enjoy Britton’s books. They’re always clean and wholesome, with wonderful characters that you never want to say goodbye to. These are the types of books that I enjoy reading again and again, and this book is par to the course. This book is first in a new series and I’m already eagerly looking forward to the next one! Britton is one of my go-to authors. I am happy to recommend to anyone who enjoys wholesome, clean and engaging romances.
I received a free audiobook from the author however this in no way influenced my opinion and I am under no obligation to leave this review.

It was such a lovely and enjoyable listen :)
Mr. Gardiner and the Governess was such a lovely and enjoyable listen!! I loved pretty much everything in it, and I think it is a testament to the author's writing skills that I enjoyed it as much as I did when the topic of bugs/insects and other similar fauna (*shudders*) was so front and center in the story. //
I loved the main characters, both Ms. Alice Sharpe and Mr. Rupert Gardiner, their kindness, compassion, shared love for all things scientific (but especially bug-related), as well as how perfectly suited they were for each other. I definitely enjoyed the governess trope and all the challenges it presented to the story, as well as the cast of secondary characters, and all that they added (from the Duke's kindness to the children's antics and everything in between). And of course, the developing sigh-inducing romance was just the cherry on top. //
The narrator did a wonderful job bringing all the characters to life, (from the Duke's children to the Duke himself, and all the way through Alice and the other governesses in the story), as well as their emotions (from excitement to dread, to worry, happiness, adoration and so on). And while I recall at least one time where I got confused as to who's POV it was (the tone of voice made me think it had switched to the other character), I still can't wait to listen to her performance of the rest of the series. //
Overall, this is a lovely story with great characters, an interesting setting, sigh-inducing romance, and the perfect start to Sally Britton's new series. Completely recommended to fans of the author's work as well as the Sweet Regency Romance genre.
