NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK

Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door.

“I just loved how intriguing the mystery is but also the dynamics between a grandmother, a mother, and a teenage daughter." —Reese Witherspoon

Think: Gilmore Girls, but with murder.

High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Then Jack—tiny in stature but fiercely independent—happens upon a dead body while kayaking. She quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She’ll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power.

With Jack and Beth’s help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservationists and wealthy ranchers. But as their amateur snooping advances into ever-more dangerous territory, the headstrong Rubicon women must learn to do the one thing they’ve always resisted: depend on each other.

Became more interesting

This was a slow start for me. It took a while to become hooked but by the middle it was really enjoyable. I love how the relationships grew and they all became closer by the end.

Nickelodeon version of a "thriller".

Such a boring read. It felt like a thriller for pre teens. There was no good reason for the main character to want to solve the "mystery". Kept listening hoping for a twist and never got it.

Struggled. 😞

Struggled to finish and gave up. Possibly before the good bits but I just couldn't get absorbed in it.

Couldn’t finish

Frustrated by a slow story and a host of characters I just can’t seem to care about.

Don’t waste your money

I don’t usually leave reviews, but a few chapters in, and I’m done. The writing is meh, the narrator sounds like she’s reading a children’s book, and so far all of the characters, from the three main to the police, do implausible things meant to elicit cliché reactions in the reader. I already know what to expect for the rest of the book, so no, thank you.

Its fun!

It is fun, and engaging. I am not usually one to give 5 star reviews but i wanted to counteract the 1 star review that, to be honest, seemed in bad faith.

Fun mystery

I’ve been looking for a light hearted fun mystery and this story fits the bill. I liked the narration and liked that the story is set in coastal Northern California. Santa Cruz is my happy place.

So dry and slow

I don’t typically not finish books, and given the other good reviews I tried my hardest to persevere… but halfway through, even on a faster speed, this is the most boring mystery I have ever listened to - and I have listened to many. I can’t spend another 5 hours of my life on it. Nothing happens. The only interesting character is Lana, and any hope I had for her being entertaining completely died after the first third of the book. There is only so much land trust information that I can hear before wanting to take a nap. Unfortunately it is a miss for me.

Cozy Murder Mystery

A comfortable mystery that kept me guessing until the end! Had just enough suspense to make me listen all the way through. Was family-centered, clean, and enjoyable to listen to!

Fell short

Not impressed, would not recommend this title to others. Fell quite short in many ways .

Nope

Just no. This story isn’t believable. The old lady figures it out and not the cops. And they let her. And she’s not even a detective but just a real estate agent. Eye roll. Dragged on too long with too many unnecessary turns.

Really enjoyed it!

Wasn't sure at first, but stuck with it and was glad I did! The relationships between the characters are lovely and the story was cleverly told. Narration was good, too.

Really Good

No wonder this is listed in Reece Witherspoon's book club and the New York Times best seller list. It's really well written for a amatuer sloth murder mystery, The plot is not rocket science but it doesn't need to be as you get drawn into the relationships of 3 generations of women coming back together again. Beautifully narrated by Jane Oppenheimer who really brought this book to life.
A big FIVE stars going out to the Author & Narrator on this one.

Good idea for a story but just didn’t grab me

The story itself was good and the author painted a clear picture of the scene and characters, but I just was not invested in the story, we knew it wasn’t Jack so I wasn’t really bothered who did it as I didn’t know enough about any of the suspects so I just didn’t care. I was really close to not finishing but pressed on with it

Far too long and drawn out.

Unnecessarily long and drawn out causing me to lose attention and interest. It could have told the same story in a more succinct way.

Loved it

I picked this because I’m a big fan of Simon’s non-fiction work about museums. Yeah it’s a nerd thing but happily the novel was very enjoyable in its own right. I love the family matriarch and the plot had enough red herrings to keep you guessing so I’m happy all round!

Great Easy Listen

I really enjoyed this story, it was a nice twist on a typical murder plot line. The characters are great and plot progressed nicely which kept me wanting to get to the next chapter.

3.7 rounded up!

More focused on the three generations than the mystery which slowed things up at times but still something I kept returning to.

A fantastic, family-oriented whodunit!

I loved this. Easy listening, but still really engaging.
An interesting dynamic around 3 generations of women, and a crime that truly brings them together. I'd recommend it for something a little more light-hearted compared to the typical whodunits.
