Publisher's Summary

Professor James Moriarty has one desire left in his shattered life...revenge.

All he wants is to shame the man who ruined him and stop the brute from harming anyone else. Then he meets amber-eyed Angelina Gould and his world turns upside down.

An exploding steam engine kills a man at the International Exhibition. While Moriarty examines the wreckage, Sherlock Holmes appears, sent to investigate by Moriarty’s enemy. Holmes finds evidence that points at Moriarty, who realizes he must either solve the crime or swing it for it himself. He soon uncovers evidence of fraud and an unscrupulous company promoter. As he pursues those leads, he bumps into the alluring Angelina at every turn. She’s playing some game, but what’s her goal? And whose side is she on?

Between them, Holmes and Angelina push Moriarty to his limits - and beyond. He’ll have to lose himself to save his life and win the woman he loves.

Great new series based on the Sherlock Holmes stories

Wow! A great new series. I was not sure what to expect but I loved it. Very ingenious to pair Moriarty and Holmes with an equally talented woman.

Absolutely Wonderful Reversal on Holmes Mysteries

So much fun! I loved this version of a Sherlock Holmes mystery... This is a twist as seen through Moriarty's eyes. It is a must read for Sherlock fans and mystery fans alike. Can it be that Mr. Holmes has it wrong about Moriarty?

Parents- It has mild language, murder scenes but not overly graphic, there is some sexual content (mention of whoring and gentlemen's needs, descriptions of intimate situations but no actual bedroom scenes)- probably PG13 and for +16 readers.

The narrator does a fantastic job with the differentiation between characters, accents, overall acting, and was just a lot of fun to listen to.

A Very Different Moriarty

For those of us who are used to seeing Professor Moriarty as the evil arch-villain of the classic Sherlock Holmes stories, Anna Castle's unexpected recasting of the brilliant but reclusive professor as a romantic hero was a pleasant surprise. Add in the presence of a very traditional Sherlock Holmes with the ever helpful Watson and a spunky, liberated, not quite wholesome Mrs. Gould as a romantic heroine, set the piece in a science savvy 19th century and throw in a handful of completely immoral British upper crust villains to provide a foil for both Moriarty and the somewhat reluctant Holmes and Castle's story was one that pulled me in as few stories have.
I LOVED this story and Jill Smith's mellifluous voice and enthusiastic style of narration just made it better.
If you're a Holmes fan, or even if you aren't, this is a story you shouldn't miss.

So much fun

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I love Sherlock Holmes stories so imagine how excited I was when there was a series on James Moriarty!!!!
And Ms Castle didn’t disappoint! To think that Sherlock actually gets the villain wrong was a interesting and is a fun turn of events.
If you like Sherlock Holmes stories you’ll like these. But just don’t think of Moriarty as the bad guy to Sherlock Holmes. Cause in this book he’s not.
Really good story about sabotage.

If you like Agatha Christie - grab this!

Delightful original story which weaves in a character we all know (Sherlock Holmes), in a completely different light, and does so quite brilliantly.
This is an old fashioned mystery read by possibly the best narrator I've ever heard. I will definitely be looking for more from this author and narrator!
I was provided this book in exchange for an honest review.

Delightful

Clever, exciting, even sexy at times. It even made math sound sexy, and that's quite an accomplishment in my opinion! Kept me on my toes. Feels like a fully realized world in a way that came across as effortless but that I know must have been a lot of work for the author. I loved seeing Sherlock Holmes from the outside and in an unflattering light. A shining example of what an indie book can be.

A well-written story from a very good author

Moriarty Meets His Match (A Professor & Mrs. Moriarty Mystery, #1), my first highly enjoyable read from author Anna Castle, An author I'd wanted to read for some time yet never got around to. A different look at Sherlock Holmes & Professor Moriarty . All I can say is WOW! December seemed to be my month for new authors, January continued the trend, and now February. A well written, entertaining read, with intriguing, well-developed characters. Slow to start but when it took off I couldn't turn pages fast enough. Jill Smith"s outstanding narration added greatly to a good book's enjoyment. “I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." I look forward to reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Interesting Twist

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and any opinions expressed herein are my own.

Interesting twist - making Moriarty into a good guy. I found it started a bit slow, but once it got going I really enjoyed this. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

The narrator, Jill Smith, did a nice job.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars...

I've always loved Sherlock Holmes stories, with all the quirkiness of his character and the ominous presence of his arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty... And I've always liked books that take a well-known, well-liked tale and dance around it, twisting it, giving it a new perspective, altering the point of view - making it into something both familiar and yet completely different... So when I came across this book I thought, why not? It may be interesting... And generally it is but...

Well, the "but" is difficult to explain. On the one hand, I love the character of Angelina Gould; she's amiable and gentle yet strong and surprising, with brilliant intelligence. Her quest to save her brother is I think the best part of the book, On the other hand, I really don't care much about Professor Moriarty - and I can't really put my finger on why... Supposedly he is very intelligent himself but somehow it doesn't show in his investigation. I had a feeling he is tossed from situation to situation without having much clue about what is going on and what to do next. His character doesn't feel real for me - the only parts I did believe in him were some of the scenes between him and Angelina, but not enough to warm me up to him...

As for the plot, it generally is an intriguing murder/embezzlement investigation, although the pace is a bit uneven. Some parts definitely slow the book down and I had a feeling (not too often, luckily) that there was too much talking and too little action, especially in the middle of the story... But the ending definitely speeds us, with some quite well described action-packed scenes - this is what made me finally round up the rating to 4 stars:)

The narration by Ms Smith is quite good, although some of the voices she gives the male characters sound really strange, unnatural. But overall the pace of her reading is good and there is a bit of good acting in the dialogues, so I'd say it's a very decent interpretation of the book.

Moriarty Meets His Match

The story started out a bit slow for me, but I stuck with it and soon found myself fully engaged. The unraveling of the mystery kept my interest, and I find myself curious to see where this series goes... especially with the little twist at the end!

There is an error in the audio files. Chapter 39 seems to be missing. Chapter 38 is repeated, and then goes directly to Chapter 40.

Seen from The Other side

Note so I do not put you off - I know this review sounds more like an academic paper but I adore both the idea and the book so much I cannot help writing about it this way ( I am not one given to sugary phases). This is a novel and one that is very easy to listen to and very enjoyable.

I adore all the Sherlock Holmes stories but maybe it's just me but anyone - real or fiction - who is always right and sings their own praises makes me wish that at least once they are wrong, fail, nothing that causes harm to them or their reputation but just enough to stop them thinking they are a supreme being who all are beneath them and hopefully will realise they are just like others, human and humans can be wrong at the time.

So enter Anna Castles Moriarty and we find a man known in the Sherlock Holmes world as the arch-villain the nemesis of Sherlock who is as is Sherlock a man who was not born into the world as an evil genius. He is given a past which shows he is a man just like all men who can be hurt, love and just wants to earn a living.

This first book introduces him to us and fleshes him out and gives us a possible first meeting with Sherlock.

The story is about Moriarty, not Sherlock - he is a minor yet important character.

The author has i feel caught the 'real' Sherlock' that we know, love and become irritated within my view.

It's very easy on the ear but gives flesh to all in the book.

The narrator Jill Smith is a great choice and I enjoy her narration so much - just one little thing that grated on me - the word Marmalade is not spoken ( here in the UK anyway) as Marmalad but as Marmalaid.

If you are a lover or a hater of Sherlock Holmes but love crime novels then this book is a must as I hope are all the other books in the series. Enjoy

Extra - I bought books 1-3 in the series although as yet only listened to Book 1 and the author herself has kindly given me Book 4 for free and I will update this review as I have listened to them.

An Intriguing Twist.

I am a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes novels and stories, therefore intrigued by this scenario. The crime novels central character is Professor James Moriarty and the mysterious Angelina Gould. Holmes and Watson and relegated to minor, though important characters. The writing is good and on the whole the conceit works. Both Moriarty and Gould are well developed and brought to life through excellent narration. The crime or crimes are intriguing and well portrayed. A very enjoyable novel.
