Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
You never forget the one that got away. But what if ‘what could have been’ is yet to come?
Daniel was the first boy to make Alison a mix tape.
But that was years ago and Ali hasn’t thought about him in a very long time. Even if she had, she might not have called him ‘the one that got away’; after all, she’d been the one to run.
Then Dan’s name pops up on her phone, with a link to a song from their shared past.
For two blissful minutes, Alison is no longer an adult in Adelaide with temperamental daughters; she is 16 in Sheffield, dancing in her skin-tight jeans. She cannot help but respond in kind.
And so begins a new mix tape.
Ali and Dan exchange songs - some new, some old - across oceans and time zones, across a lifetime of different experiences, until one of them breaks the rules and sends a message that will change everything....
Because what if ‘what could have been’ is yet to come?

Great story
As I live in Adelaide but come from the UK this story was totally relatable. Even better that there is a playlist that you can download too.
It was an easy enjoyable story that got me hooked straight away.
The only downside is that South African accents crept in occasionally from the narrator.

Nice
I enjoyed this book, as a Brit living in Aus I especially liked the back and forth between the 2 places. But, the Australian accents sound very South African. Good try though! I think the Aussie accent is probably hard to grasp if you're not raised around it, But it didn't really detract from the story, it just would have added a touch of something with a strong Aussie accent. Especially Sheila and Dora. Lovely story and lovely narrator.

The musical references that threaded the soundtrack of life and memories of these characters was really enjoyable. Discovered a few artists along the way!

Loved it
A romance across the globe and lost love combined with music family and interesting characters made this book very enjoyable. Light but with hard problems we all face written with no judgment

Loved the story but, oh, that accent!
I really enjoyed this story and have been loving listening to the songs as well. I know everybody says that an Australian accent is very difficult to 'do' and that was very obvious in the reading of this book. I enjoyed the rest of the narration but, given how much of this book is set in Australia, it's disappointing that the Aussie dialogue wasn't up to the rest of the book's excellent standard.

Get ready to download songs...
Exquisitely crafted and beautifully told story about first true love, the circumstances and pain of separation then the joy and intrigue of reunion. To be honest, it took me longer to read than it should have because the story is punctuated with songs that I had to stop and listen to along the way (added an amazing new dimension and another level of connection to the characters). I now have my own Spotify "Mix Tape" playlist :-)
Wonderfully narrated by Candida Gubbins. Highly recommended book.

not my style
The narration of this book was incredible, all of those different accents would have left me quite confused but Candida smashed it. I don't feel any of the characters in this book were very likeable at all, with the exception of Peter. I felt sorry for Candace and Michael.
