You never forget the one that got away. But what if ‘what could have been’ is yet to come?

Daniel was the first boy to make Alison a mix tape.

But that was years ago and Ali hasn’t thought about him in a very long time. Even if she had, she might not have called him ‘the one that got away’; after all, she’d been the one to run.

Then Dan’s name pops up on her phone, with a link to a song from their shared past.

For two blissful minutes, Alison is no longer an adult in Adelaide with temperamental daughters; she is 16 in Sheffield, dancing in her skin-tight jeans. She cannot help but respond in kind.

And so begins a new mix tape.

Ali and Dan exchange songs - some new, some old - across oceans and time zones, across a lifetime of different experiences, until one of them breaks the rules and sends a message that will change everything....

Because what if ‘what could have been’ is yet to come?

Exquisitely crafted and beautifully told story about first true love, the circumstances and pain of separation then the joy and intrigue of reunion. To be honest, it took me longer to read than it should have because the story is punctuated with songs that I had to stop and listen to along the way (added an amazing new dimension and another level of connection to the characters). I now have my own Spotify "Mix Tape" playlist :-)
Wonderfully narrated by Candida Gubbins. Highly recommended book.

A barrel of songs, loss and love

This author’s previous books were clever and appealing, but this one climbs into the stratosphere. It sent me scurrying into Spotify and iTunes to listen to the all important music that is so important to the two main characters. And scurrying too to the box of tissues because, although many of the twists and turns were ever so mildly telegraphed and predictable, the writing is nevertheless so good that the lump in your throat and tear in your eye are very real. Bravo, Jane Sanderson!

Odious

A nasty little piece altogether. Some naming of songs. Otherwise not much to commend it. Escapism with a touch of violence, alcoholism, neglect and abuse. But all ends well, for the star crossed lovers at any rate.
