About this listen

Missus takes us behind the lives of Hughie and Mumma, out of the gritty realism of inner city slum life and into the past of the stations, the bush and the country towns. We meet them as they were in the early 1920s, drifter Hugh Darcy, the unwilling hero who sweeps the dreamily innocent Margaret Kilker off her feet. Ruth Park richly creates the turmoil of those early days of their courtship in the dusty outback, filled with beautifully drawn characters that will make you laugh as much as cry. Ruth Park’s Australian classics take you from the barren landscapes of the outback to the colourful slums of Sydney with convincing depth, careful detail and great heart.

Great story, filled with laughter, sadness, real affections. Hugh the likeable rogue a very realistic look at life with all of its ups and downs. Ruth Park ever the brilliant story teller with a kinship for the Irish.

This is one of those wonderful stories that makes it difficult to start another book afterwards. Happily there's 2 following books and I've already started the next which is as good if not better so far.
Kate does a super job with the narration, never forgetting which voice is which.
I loved the charachter build up, the true humour, the feeling of being there 'in time'.
I particularly enjoyed the lack of "book filling waffle" some books have. Be alert because the story moves on without nonsence.
I don't doubt I'll listen again in time.

Such a great story
