Publisher's Summary

Summer 1917 and Great Britain is still at war with Germany. Stylish lady detective, Miss Isabel Hewitt, is asked by her friend, Doctor Anne Murray, to find the mother of a new born baby, abandoned on the doorstep of Anne's hospital. Isabel goes to Luton in Bedfordshire, where Anne's hospital is situated and begins her investigation. Her search leads her to a local hat factory and a possible name for the mother. But the girl is currently missing. Meanwhile, she meets an old acquaintance, Gertie Chisholm, from school at the hotel where she is staying. Isabel doesn't like her but is forced to socialise. Gertie's husband is a flying ace and Gertie flies and owns a plane herself. She takes Isabel up for a spin. Isabel is not keen to go but, whilst in the air, she spies something suspicious on the ground. She then becomes embroiled in a murder investigation which has dangerous consequences for both her and the baby."
