Publisher's Summary

It is spring 1917, and Great Britain is at war with Germany. On the home front, stylish lady detective Miss Isabel Hewitt and her household are coping with the current food shortages, caused by the activity of German U-Boats. They are keeping chickens and growing their own vegetables. Isabel's friend, Elvira Stone, is staying with her, so they can pool their resources.

Isabel is approached by a young munitions worker, Joyce Wright, whose brother Sergeant Percy Wright was shot for cowardice six months earlier. Joyce asks Isabel to help clear her brother's name - for she has evidence that he was not the one trying to flee the battlefield. Isabel is not sure she will be able to help, but agrees to make a few inquiries. But soon, there is a mysterious death, and she finds herself caught up in a murder investigation, with absolutely no clue as to who the killer is, or how the crime was committed.

Will this case get the better of her, or will justice prevail? Her task is hindered by her friend Elvira, who falls into bad company at the wrong moment.
