Something very weird is happening to Dawn and Rory, and it's not just their new step-family. Slurping slobberers want to suck their bones out. Strange steel sheep want to smash them to pieces. Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

scary for children

Editorial reviews
Unfortunately for Keith, he’s got a couple of misery guts for parents. Nothing seems to get them to smile and they are always sad and full of dejection. Misery Guts written and performed with a cheerful enthusiasm by award-winning children’s author Morris Gleitzman, is the funny story of Keith and his clumsy but well-intentioned attempts to cheer up his parents. The problem, Keith finally realizes, is the drab and dull setting of England. This epiphany sets off a hilarious chain of events as Keith tries his best to get his family to relocate to the beautiful Australia.
Publisher's Summary
What does a kid do when his Mum and Dad are misery guts? Move them to a tropical paradise, decides Keith. That'll cheer them up.
It's a brilliant plan, if he can pull it off.
