Publisher's Summary

World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea - the power of our mindset.

Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment but may actually jeopardise success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades as well as reach our own goals - personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

Narrator sounds robotic

The content is great, the narration... not great. I persevered as Dweck is onto something with the growth mindset idea. Please have someone else ‘perform’ this audiobook.

Fantastic book. Sadly narrator sounded robotic.

After reading the paper book first I knew it was great. As soon as it came on Audible I wanted to listen to it over and over. I struggled to really listen as I was distracted by the narrator as she sounded robotic and she was annoying. I got through it once. I will not listen to it through this narrator again. I would prefer to read the book myself not listen to a robotic voice. I would love another narrator to read this book as it is that good and this book deserves a better narrator.

great book, but robotic voice was annoying

the material covered in this book is explained well and definitely thought provoking for me as an individual, partner, parent and healthcare professional. I did find the narrators voice a bit android like, not sure if it was a real person or AI but spoiled the experience for me.

Great idea, doesn’t translate outside USA

Great topic and idea but I don’t live in the USA and I’m not that into sports. Most (almost all) of the reference examples were sporting examples (baseball, basketball etc). I feel these examples were too simplified and I found myself tuning out every time another sporting example was used. I would love to see more corporate examples :-)

this book and narrator sound like my teacher teaching history class. No emotion, just fact with bias opinion.

A life changing mindset shift

This research is seminal. It is empowering and liberating. The book has a lot of detail and many examples. Some very practical steps are outlined in the last few chapters. Excellent

Is not what I expect, is not a practical book

I was expecting a book with strategies, a roadmap that could be easy to apply. The book os redudant in stories and examples that could be resume, I just could listen all. I jumped to the end and find a few interesting insights but it was a bit dissapointing.

The strange robotic voice is so incongruent with the topic it makes it very hard to enjoy and learn from. I gave up at chapter 3.

Don’t bother

Well, that’s hours of my life that I’ll never get back. I was going to give up part way through but persisted in the hope it would get better. Basically, It is based on the idea there are two types of mindset; the fixed mindset, and the growth mindset. The fixed mindset believes you are restricted by your natural abilities and aptitude’s, and the growth mindset is the belief you can always improve with hard work, training etc. Sound interesting? I thought so too. But then that is pretty much it. Doesn’t really elaborate much further. Just gives tonnes and tonnes of examples: “this person did this because they have a fixed mindset, but this person did that because they had a growth mindset. Over, and over, and over again. The same thing. Really boring, and disappointing. Even towards the end where you’re hoping for some conclusion or some actual constructive advise, you don’t really get it. Save yourself the time. Read this review and you have basically read the book, but in a fraction of the time.

Interesting book, shame about the narrator!

The theory behind Carol Dweck's book is fascinating and thought provoking. I bought it on several recommendations, and they were all well-founded. However, the narrator made it so difficult to listen to! Her intonation was wrong, and I spent the first five or six chapters wondering if it was actually an automated voice rather than a real person. She got easier to listen to later on in the book, but I think it was just that I had got used to her voice then and could follow her more easily through familiarity with her tones.

Thoroughly engaging

Lots of anecdotes thtat allowed a wide understanding of growth mindset. I would have liked the last chapter to be longer - how to put the growth mindset into practice.

All about having a Growth Mindset

This book focuses alot about Growth Vs Fixed Mindset in various aspects such as Work, Sports and Relationships. The examples provided are concrete in solidifying the concept of Growth Mindset. The reader has a robotic voice which you will get used to eventually.

Good content, awful narration

Some very interesting content and research, if a little repetitive. However, the narrator sounds like a robot and I nearly gave up because of that. Worst narrator I’ve listened to on Audible.

Great message, but lacking in the 'how to'

Everything Dr Dweck is saying in the book is great. I found myself nodding all the way through. However, I couldn't find any significant focus on HOW to change from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. She refers to various workshops that have been run with kids and adults, I wish she'd included some of those exercises in this book. I wanted to learn how to increase and develop my growth mindset, not just listen to hmthr benefits of having a growth mindset. Ironic isn't it...she didn't include the parts on how to grow a growth mindset 😄
