"Casualmente mi guardai allo specchio. La mia faccia stravolta mi parve estremamente ripugnante: pallida, cattiva, vile, con i capelli arruffati. "Va bene così, ne sono contento", pensai, "sono proprio contento di apparirle ripugnante; la cosa mi fa piacere...".
Diviso in due parti, la prima è intitolata "Il sottosuolo", la seconda "A proposito della neve bagnata" e pubblicato nel 1864, "Memorie dal sottosuolo" è uno straordinario monologo nel quale il protagonista si scaglia contro gli ideali di una società basata su scienza e ragione. Il "sottosuolo" rappresenta una sfera psichica, un mondo interiore nel quale cercare riparo dalle leggi imposte dal mondo esterno.
