Diviso in due parti, la prima è intitolata "Il sottosuolo", la seconda "A proposito della neve bagnata" e pubblicato nel 1864, "Memorie dal sottosuolo" è uno straordinario monologo nel quale il protagonista si scaglia contro gli ideali di una società basata su scienza e ragione. Il "sottosuolo" rappresenta una sfera psichica, un mondo interiore nel quale cercare riparo dalle leggi imposte dal mondo esterno.
