Einst lebte in Wien ein Schmied, Meister Martin, der wegen seiner gewaltigen Stärke in der ganzen Stadt bekannt und berühmt war; man hieß ihn deshalb den „Eisenarm“. Der Schmied hatte noch eine andere Eigenart, die dazu beitrug, dass ihn seine Mitmenschen mit besonderen Augen ansahen. Er arbeitete nämlich in seiner Werkstatt tagtäglich, auch an Sonn- und Feiertagen, wiewohl dies gegen jeden Brauch und gegen das Kirchengebot verstieß, aber nur so viel und so lange, bis er vier Groschen verdient hatte. Dann legte er sein Schurzfell ab und sperrte seine Werkstatt zu.
