Publisher's Summary

Winner of the 2020 Christopher Isherwood Prize

From the widely renowned author Andrew O'Hagan, a heartbreaking novel of an extraordinary lifelong friendship.

Everyone has a Tully Dawson: the friend who defines your life.

In the summer of 1986, in a small Scottish town, James and Tully ignite a brilliant friendship based on music, films and the rebel spirit. With school over and the locked world of their fathers before them, they rush towards the climax of their youth: a magical weekend in Manchester, the epicentre of everything that inspires them in working-class Britain. There, against the greatest soundtrack ever recorded, a vow is made: to go at life differently. Thirty years on, half a life away, the phone rings. Tully has news.

Mayflies is a memorial to youth's euphorias and to everyday tragedy. A tender goodbye to an old union, it discovers the joy and the costs of love.

A Story Not to be Missed

A beautiful story which made me laugh out loud and weep in public. A great description of growing up through the 80s. An inspired description of life and friendship of struggle and determination. Carefully crafted, wonderfully told. Exceptional.

I'm crying and laughing!!

I will be listening to this book again! the story interweaving the bright lives of some mates on a weekend of crazy fun, and then catching them in their later years is wonderful. Then following Tully and Noodles till the end...i don't want to give anything away.

Do yourself a favour, listen to this story.

Andrew O'Hagans Scottish accent is a delight to listen to. I'm an Aussie who is a sucker for this accent!

reality bites

a story read by the author and I don't think anyone could have told it with so much emotion.
the story itself is moving but not so profound to make you sit in a corner contemplating the mortality of life.

A fantastic story

I chose this book on the recommendation by Trent Dalton when he appeared on ABC and was asked to pick some favourite books. Very entertaining but also very poignant.

Noodles is a p**f!

I’m unaware of any more tender depiction of male friendship than the one Andrew O’Hagan draws here. It’s poignancy is all the more relevant in the ears of this West of Scotland listener, as such expression of emotion is prohibited by unspoken tribal edict. Hence my denigration of the principal character as a p**f, before taking myself to a quiet corner for a greet. Well done Big Man!

Remarkable book

I’ve never written a review for Audible or Amazon before but felt moved to say what an extraordinarily touching and funny book this is, in my opinion. The author’s own narration added enormously to the story. Thank you - I wonder what else this writer has written.......

A tale of true friendship

A book that encapsulates the best of friendship and the best of humanity.
I read the first chapter and stopped, bought my best friend a copy, then finished this brilliant book in one sitting.

Simple beautiful

A coming of age story showing how friendships in our childhood (if held onto) can be the most beautiful parts of our existence. Love and friendship the main themes with surrounding glimpses into the how life was in the glory days, cannot recommend this book enough for many laughs, tears and recommendations into proper music.

Nice story

I didn’t find this as good as other reviewers, for me it was marred by the performance. I wish authors would let other people perform their audiobooks, I think it is a skilled art and this one just fell flat. It felt a little like someone reading his memoirs, I didn’t get the characters very well and so didn’t emotionally invest in them. I think I would have enjoyed it more as a physical book, and I can absolutely see that it will appeal to men who were teenagers in the 80s.
