Publisher's Summary

Ever wonder what your therapist is really thinking? Now you can find out...a hilarious, thought-provoking and surprising new book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist's world.

Meet Lori Gottlieb, an insightful and compassionate therapist whose clients present with all kinds of problems. There’s the struggling new parents; the older woman who feels she has nothing to live for; the self-destructive young alcoholic; and the terminally ill 35-year-old newlywed.

And there’s John, a narcissistic television producer, who frankly just seems to be a bit of a jerk. Over the course of a year, they all make progress. But Gottlieb is not just a therapist - she’s also a patient who's on a journey of her own.

Interspersed with the stories of her clients are her own therapy sessions, as Gottlieb goes in search of the hidden roots of a devastating and life-changing event.

Personal, revealing, funny and wise, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone opens a rare window onto a world that is most often bound by secrecy, offering an illuminating tour of a profoundly private process.

Intricately written

This book is wonderfully presented, by the therapist, who we also learn is human. It’s funny and sad and thoughtful and well narrated.

Verrrrryyy long story

Read a review that said they were sick of the story teller half way through and that kind of resonated with me. Although a great story and a useful tool for self reflection I found myself struggling to get through the last few hours even with its relevance

One of the best books i have ever read

This book had me laughing, sobbing, smiling, screaming. It was amazing, and written so well. It makes you reflect on your own experiences and just tells the story so well that you don't even realise you are doing it. It is humorous and leaves you wanting to continue without ever having to stop!

I feel on the fence with this one

I thought there were some good insights at times. But I also found it self-indulgent. I started to feel a bit sick of the main character halfway through. I felt myself willing her to stop thinking and start living, and not tell me about every inch of it.

Therapy 101

I enjoyed the way the book is constructed- chapters on clients and self in therapy. For anyone who wonders what a psychologist does and some of the tools used this is a great book!

Very interesting mix

This book was self help mixed in with what seemed like a story. I really enjoyed this book and I feel a bit sad that it’s over. I really liked the narrator.

A pass

I didn’t like this book. I found it quite boring and lacking in depth overall and verging on cringeworthy in parts. The author tries so hard that it was difficult to listen to at times. The overacting of the narration didn’t help. Given the subject I expected something interesting and insightful but it wasn’t either.

Don’t listen to the last five or six chapters while driving!

I loved this book and all the characters in it. It was difficult to not form a connection with each of the characters in the book as you shared their journey through therapy. I found the last five or six chapters emotionally difficult to listen to and while driving the car to work experienced floods of tears as each characters story was brought to a conclusion. A satisfying listen that has left me questioning my life, my decisions, my stuckness in my situation. Great to listen to a book that makes you reflect on your circumstances and how different life could be if you could find the courage to take the required steps. Maybe I need to talk to someone!

Highly recommended

Lori writes really well and the story of her and her clients flows well (and the narrator brings it to life). The book demystifies therapy and the concept of mental health, while offering some great food for thought in the quotes, dialogues and words used in the book. Highly highly recommend.

Just bad

Lori Gottlieb is a bad therapist. She is a very dislikable person and her out of control narcissism shines through in the book. Worse though is that she’s just a bad therapist. Her therapy is insight orientated and completely misses the point. She’s incapable of any thought beyond the pseudo intelectual. This book is just bad. Well read though

Insightful, powerful, normal and highly enjoyable

As a counsellor I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, both the account of giving and receiving counselling. I kept thinking of clients I wanted to recommend it to, so you certainly don't have to be in the profession to get lots out of it - it's an account of life struggles and triumphs, existentialism and endings. It'll certainly give you personal insight. It's also written in an easy to follow way and isn't full of counselling lingo or terminology and is fully geared towards ordinary people, going about life wondering what the meaning of it all.

Listen! Listen now!

I adore this book and will come back to it again in the future. I cared about what happened to every character, and it was peppered with non-preachy wisdom too. At times, deeply emotional and, at others, beautifully funny! The narrator also seemed very real, like this was believably her book, her words. Perfect listen for me as a trainee counsellor, and I imagine a great many people would love it.

What an absolutely fantastic listen!

I don't usually read or listen to non fiction that much but this book came so highly recommended, that I decided to give it a go. I loved it! I laughed and cried, and some parts felt like it was written especially for me. I learnt so much from this book and relearnt about living once again in the best possible way - by letting go of unnecessary thoughts and things. Great book!

Overall very interesting.

I found many parts of this book very interesting and found myself feeling engrossed in the different character's stories. I did however find the fact Gottlieb referred to her ex as 'boyfriend' the whole time very irritating. I struggled mid-way through to keep interested but eventually got back into the story.

Warm and insightful

I really enjoyed the narrator's pace and reading. I would recommend the book for someone who works in a healing profession but not only. I think this is a great read for anyone who wants to get more insight about us as humans, our everyday struggles, questions and confusions. Very vivid; I've grown fond of the characters and their stories, at times it was as if I was there with the narrator.

Just Brilliant

I am training to be a therapist and this book was a fantastic break from the text books yet still hugely educational.
