Publisher's Summary

Ever wonder what your therapist is really thinking? Now you can find out...a hilarious, thought-provoking and surprising new book that takes us behind the scenes of a therapist's world.

Meet Lori Gottlieb, an insightful and compassionate therapist whose clients present with all kinds of problems. There’s the struggling new parents; the older woman who feels she has nothing to live for; the self-destructive young alcoholic; and the terminally ill 35-year-old newlywed.

And there’s John, a narcissistic television producer, who frankly just seems to be a bit of a jerk. Over the course of a year, they all make progress. But Gottlieb is not just a therapist - she’s also a patient who's on a journey of her own.

Interspersed with the stories of her clients are her own therapy sessions, as Gottlieb goes in search of the hidden roots of a devastating and life-changing event.

Personal, revealing, funny and wise, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone opens a rare window onto a world that is most often bound by secrecy, offering an illuminating tour of a profoundly private process.

A must read for any therapist

This is a beautifully written, poignant and educational book. Every therapist will relate to moments in the conversations and anyone who is curious about how therapy works will have new insights.

I feel on the fence with this one

I thought there were some good insights at times. But I also found it self-indulgent. I started to feel a bit sick of the main character halfway through. I felt myself willing her to stop thinking and start living, and not tell me about every inch of it.

What a wonderful refreshing look at talking therapy!

Lori Gottlieb knows what she writes about & narration by Brittany Pressley captured the essence of Lori’s words.
This audiobook was enlightening for me as Lori wrote from both sides of therapy: being in it as a client & also as a therapist.
Told with good humour & examples of human behaviour I highly recommend it!

Authentic and Personal

The characters stories, reveal the complexities of being human, as experienced and understood from an objective, gentle, personalised, 'safe space' as can be found in a therapists room.
Self reflective opportunities are abundant.
The book reads well, it covers a range of concerns, and though our 'concerns with ourselves' are worthy of deep consideration, this is approached in a light way.
tho book serves as both an introduction to what therapy is and how it should look, feel and progress, but is also a beautifully expressed volume that catalogues the writers personal journey, through her own heartache as she endeavours to be both the best therapist she can be, and find, in the therapy sessions she has sought for herself, a way to move forwards in her own life.

Therapy 101

I enjoyed the way the book is constructed- chapters on clients and self in therapy. For anyone who wonders what a psychologist does and some of the tools used this is a great book!

Very interesting mix

This book was self help mixed in with what seemed like a story. I really enjoyed this book and I feel a bit sad that it’s over. I really liked the narrator.

Insight into psychological therapy and people’s thought processes

I can always tell if a book have a profound impact on me when I wake up in the middle of the night and think about the book. (I’ve stumbled upon this book at exactly the right time and I might even listen to it again in future.) I loved the way in which this book made me reflect on my own emotional perspective of my life but also gave me insight into other people’s thought processes and struggles. Al of us have insecurities. (It can almost serve as a sort of self-help book but in a fictional format.) Loved it!

A pass

I didn’t like this book. I found it quite boring and lacking in depth overall and verging on cringeworthy in parts. The author tries so hard that it was difficult to listen to at times. The overacting of the narration didn’t help. Given the subject I expected something interesting and insightful but it wasn’t either.

Insightful, powerful, normal and highly enjoyable

As a counsellor I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, both the account of giving and receiving counselling. I kept thinking of clients I wanted to recommend it to, so you certainly don't have to be in the profession to get lots out of it - it's an account of life struggles and triumphs, existentialism and endings. It'll certainly give you personal insight.
It's also written in an easy to follow way and isn't full of counselling lingo or terminology and is fully geared towards ordinary people, going about life wondering what the meaning of it all.

Listen! Listen now!

I adore this book and will come back to it again in the future. I cared about what happened to every character, and it was peppered with non-preachy wisdom too. At times, deeply emotional and, at others, beautifully funny! The narrator also seemed very real, like this was believably her book, her words. Perfect listen for me as a trainee counsellor, and I imagine a great many people would love it.

A generous fantastic listen

I Loved every second of this book. It made me laugh out loud and cry tears of sadness and recognition. All the characters were so real it was theatre in my head. I would recommend this audio book to anyone including therapists and those considering becoming therapists, clients and those considering therapy.

Entertaining and informative, very touching!

This book captures what it is to be a human in our times, how we grow and develop. And how sometimes we get in our ways.
While the stories and subjects are real and provoke deep emotions, this book does not depress, it encourages hope and compassion.
The aspect I enjoyed the most was that the author managed to maintain a balance between hardship and hope when talking about human lives. This made the story come alive for me.
