Publisher's Summary

In the struggle between warring parents, who will protect the child?

Garry Hartshorn and Softie Monaghan were never love's young dream. Not even on their wedding day.

Softie was sophisticated, a career woman, who owned a nice apartment overlooking St Kilda Beach. Garry had a few rough edges, plus one failed marriage and an assortment of jobs under his belt. But Softie's body clock was ticking, and Garry wanted children....

So they got married and produced the only thing they ever had in common: Matilda.

Now, two years later, their golden-haired child is at the centre of a bitter divorce and custody battle. Both parents insist that her well-being is the only thing they care about. Yet, in truth, Matilda was always the one most likely to become lost.

Average- just…

Overington is *OBVIOUSLY* not from Melbourne… And nor did she do *ANY* research on living in Melbourne…
One cannot catch a tram from Footscray to the city, & the tram from the city stops at Burwood.
To make this trip, you’d catch the train to Flinders St, then another train on the Glen Waverley Line, to Glen Waverley!
Google Maps would’ve told you this!!

No mention at all by *ANY* character that the child was called “Gary Cooper” - a major movie star from the end of the silent film era through to the end of the golden age of Classical Hollywood. Something that Gary’s parents (& anyone their age) would at least would’ve mentioned. (Eg/ “Oh, like the movie star!”)

Monaghan (a main character) is pronounced “MON-a-hAn” this was SOOOO frustrating!!! Though only one of many of the very frustrating things about this *REALLY* poorly thought-out, researched, and narrated book.

The Royal Childrens’ Hospital is actually on Royal Park Pde… not “Park Pde”!!!

On the literary side… there are so many, “He said…” then “She said…” then “He said…” etc ad infinitum.
And it’s true! It *DOES* get a little better when it transitions to, “I go…” “Then she goes…”, …”Then I go…”

Gary is supposed to be a self-described “bogan”… he’d not speak with such a “normal” (verging on “cultured Australian accented”) voice as the narrator gave Gary. (In fact, you can’t really tell one character from the other…)

Malvern Star pronunciation -“MAL-VERN” like (Mol-vrn)

MALVERN (ˈmɔːlvən/) !!! Just Google it - I did… it took seconds!

The narrator, didn’t do any research on Melbourne, as he doesn’t know how to pronounce Franco Cozzo’s (COTTZO) name, or even faithfully do a half-decent representation - something that you could easily look up on YouTube.
The same could be said for Overington, who was lazy not to include one of his iconic lines, eg/ “Come down to Franco Cozzo! In Brunswick, and Foot’is’scray (sic)!”

If you can jump over the “InterPol/Scotland Yard PLOT HOLES” and the rest of the guff, have a few hours to kill… (BTW, make sure you don’t pay for this rubbish, though)!

Believable.

Good story.
There were aspects of both parents that didn't sit well with me but real people can be like that I guess .
I just wish the ending had been different and that Softy learned the truth.

Great characterisation

I enjoyed this book and always appreciate stories set in Australia. The narration was great, and characterisation was spot on. I did feel it got quite bogged down in the middle with endless details (beautifully described but not adding a lot to the story) the plot at the end was nearly put away but it seemed just a bit too tidy.

A bit long winded but heart warming

It was a tough time for dads but there were good men out there.
I liked the epilogue

Brilliant story told exceptionally

I've just finished listening, there are still tears in my eyes from the last line. I was hooked from the very beginning, I love the way the story unfolds. This is the second book I've listened to by Caroline Overington, and it won't be the last. The only thing that didn't feel right was the way Softy spoke, bit of an accent, just didn't sound right. But overall I loved the book.
