Mateo Falcone, ambientado esta vez en la isla de Córcega. El protagonista, que da título a la obra, es un brutal campesino de gatillo fácil que vive en compañía de su mujer y sus cuatro hijos. El más pequeño, Fortunato, es también el único varón y tiene tan sólo diez años. Un día, cuando éste se encuentra sólo en casa, llega a ella un bandolero herido al que persigue la policía. El muchacho accede a esconderlo a cambio de una moneda pero, cuando aparece aquélla, ante el ardid del sargento que le ofrece un bonito reloj como premio, Fortunato lo delata. Al enterarse de ello el bestial Falcone, que no admite que su hijo sea un traidor, tomará una decisión inhumana.
