About this listen

Katherine Switzer ran the Boston Marathon in 1967, where she was attacked by one of the event's directors who wanted to eject her from the all-male race. She fought off the director and finished the race. From the childhood events that inspired her to winning the New York City Marathon in 1974, this book details the struggles and achievements of a pioneering woman in sports.

Critic Reviews

"A thoughtfully written memoir...[Switzer is] still running strong; she's headed back to Boston this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her 1967 pioneering run, making this a perfect time to brush up on running history." (Mother Runner)

"Kathrine Switzer is the Susan B. Anthony of women's marathoning." (Joan Benoit Samuelson, first Olympic Gold Medalist in the women's marathon)

I have at least 30 Audible books and this is the best. K. Switzer is a superb writer and someone whose positivity and determination to bounce back is second to none. The funny moments have out loud laughter, the poignant ones had me gasping in surprise. Wonderful - highly recommended.

Totally engaging, I never thought recaps of races from 40-50 years ago could be so gripping. Beautifully read by the author, I felt like I was right there running alongside her. The editing was the only flaw, I counted at least eight instances where sentences were repeated.

Perfect for listening while running.

Being a keen runner myself, and a female at that this gives me a sense of pride and gratitude for the freedom I have today. Women shouldn’t have had to or continue to fight for many things in life such as sport participation, education, voting or self efficacy but we should be thankful to those who lead the charge for equality.

Uplifting and Inspirational!

A truly, truly inspirational autobiography of an absolutely magnificent woman. It is not an understatement to say Kathrine's tireless lifelong work has been instrumental to changing the lives of women everywhere. Not just that day at Boston, not just for women athletes, but for equality, empowerment, and advancement of women's rights all over the world.

Wow!!! What a woman!
