Es ist die Geschichte eines Verlustes, des Verlustes von Kindheit und Unschuld. Malka Mai lebt mit ihrer Mutter Hanna, einer erfolgreichen Ärztin, und ihrer älteren Schwester im von den Deutschen besetzten Polen. Im September 1943 ist die kleine Familie wie so viele jüdische Bürger gezwungen, die Flucht zu ergreifen. Doch Malka wird unterwegs so krank, dass sie bei einem Bauern zurückbleiben muss.
Nach Ungarn, so wird verabredet, wird Malka nachgebracht - sobald es ihr wieder besser geht. Doch der Bauer hält nicht Wort. Malka muss mit sieben Jahren lernen, sich in Zeiten von Krieg und Deportationen alleine durchzuschlagen. Um Hunger, Kälte, Einsamkeit und Grauen ertragen zu können, entwickelt Malka ihre eigenen Überlebensstrategien.
