भीष्म अथवा भीष्म पितामह महाभारत के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण पात्रें में से एक थे। भीष्म महाराजा शान्तनु और देव नदी गंगा की आठवीं सन्तान थे द्य उनका मूल नाम देवव्रत था। भीष्म में अपने पिता शान्तनु का सत्यवती से विवाह करवाने के लिए आजीवन ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करने की भीषण प्रतिज्ञा की थी। इन्हें अपनी उस भीष्म प्रतिज्ञा के लिये भी सर्वाधिक जाना जाता है जिसके कारण ये राजा बनने के बावजूद आजीवन हस्तिनापुर के सिंहासन के संरक्षक की भूमिका निभाई। इन्होंने आजीवन विवाह नहीं किया व ब्रह्मचारी रहे। इसी प्रतिज्ञा का पालन करते हुए महाभारत में उन्होने कौरवों की तरफ से युद्ध में भाग लिया था। इन्हें इच्छा मृत्यु का वरदान था। यह कौरवों के पहले प्रधान सेनापति थे। जो सर्वाधिक दस दिनो तक कौरवों के प्रधान सेनापति रहे थे। महाभारत युद्ध ऽत्म होने पर इन्होंने गंगा किनारे इच्छा मृत्यु ली।©2020 Storyside IN (P)2020 Storyside IN
