Publisher's Summary

When editor Susan Ryeland is given the tattered manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has little idea it will change her life. She's worked with the revered crime writer for years, and his detective, Atticus Pund, is renowned for solving crimes in the sleepy English villages of the 1950s.

As Susan knows only too well, vintage crime sells handsomely. It's just a shame that it means dealing with an author like Alan Conway....

But Conway's latest tale of murder at Pye Hall is not quite what it seems. Yes, there are dead bodies and a host of intriguing suspects, but hidden in the pages of the manuscript there lies another story: a tale written between the very words on the page, telling of real-life jealousy, greed, ruthless ambition and murder.

From Sunday Times best seller Anthony Horowitz comes Magpie Murders, his deliciously dark take on the vintage crime novel, brought bang up to date with a fiendish modern twist.

Read by Samantha Bond and Allan Corduner.

Two mysteries in one, it can't get any better!

This book was in my recommended listens since I enjoy a good crime story and I thought I'd give it a go, the overview sounded promising. I always enjoyed a good "who'd done it" and this one didn't disappoint. It has a smart modern crime story and a classic British detective in one. Loved the twists, narration and pace. Will definitely keep an eye out for this author in the future.

So very witty and tricky

Look this book is so clever, it twists, it turns and it takes the micky. The readers are brilliant and catch the tone so well. It is very long but so worth the wait and I laughed out loud when at the end I was informed who the publisher is - you will get the joke, it is very cheeky. Well done Mr Horowitz

A double who done it

An interesting take on a murder mystery. Very enjoyable story with a few creative twists and turns. The narration was also very good!

Dual Story Lines, Agatha Christiesque - BRILLIANT!

Having enjoyed previous works of Anthony Horowitz, was confident of a good read (listen). As a self confessed Agatha Christie tragic (yes I've enjoyed a number of Anthony's TV interpretations) , and lover of dual time period novels, this book had it all.

The twists and turns, following two time periods and story lines was nothing short of an engaging experience. The concept was fresh and well delivered. Not a style that could easily be replicated so look forward to further new concepts from this amazing author.

The frequent reference to Miss Christie's works was a nice touch, however, won't detract for those who are not as passionate readers of her books.

Narration of Allan Corduner & Samantha Bond only added to the enjoyment of this experience. Look forward to further works by this author. BRILLIANT.

Highly Recommend.

Entertaining homage to Christie

I enjoyed this concept of a crime novel within a crime novel. One set in the publishing world, one pays homage to vintage Christie. Good fun.

Very clever

This was a very a witty twist on the classic 'murder mystery'. It works as a straight mystery and it works as a commentary on the genre. This was my favourite book of 2016.

Exceptional Voice Acting

What did you like best about this story?

Two stories in one, quite an interesting concept. The writing style is excellent and totally flowing and natural.

What does Allan Corduner and Samantha Bond bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The voice acting by both actors is exceptional, multiple characters, different accents and genders all easily handled and it all sounded perfectly natural. I did not get confused as to which character was in focus. Allan and Samantha really made the prose real for me. Which is to be expected, as I discovered later that they both are established performers.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The second part of the book and how the main female character told the story but at the same time talked to the reader. It was flawless in natural language.

Any additional comments?

It was great how the author keeps you guessing about TWO mysteries simultaneously!

So boring, so unlikely. Please let it end, I'm nearly in tears , it's misery. Don't waste your money
