About this listen

From the imaginations of bestselling authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare comes a heart-stopping plunge into the magical unknown.

Think you know magic?

Think again.

The Magisterium awaits . . .

Most people would do anything to get into the Magisterium and pass the Iron Trial.

Not Callum Hunt.

Call has been told his whole life that he should never trust a magician. And so he tries his best to do his worst – but fails at failing.

Now he must enter the Magisterium.
It's a place that's both sensational and sinister. And Call realizes it has dark ties to his past and a twisty path to his future.

The Iron Trial is just the beginning. Call’s biggest test is still to come . . .

Critic Reviews

moves deftly into the gap left by Harry Potter . . . all the ingredients of a gripping tale for young teenagers
A thrilling coming-of-age story that embraces fantasy tropes while keeping readers guessing.
The Iron Trial is merely a setup and introduction, and promises to take subsequent instalments of the Magisterium series in a more complex and philosophical direction
This is an incredible book . . . once you've started reading, its hard to put the book down. It's awesome! It's full of suspense and I cannot wait for the next book in the series to be released!
The strange, subterranean Magisterium is vividly rendered, and a string of ominous revelations will leave readers eager for future installments. Fans of both authors will enjoy getting to know this well-rounded cast in the first steps of their adventure
The third-person narration, filtered through Callum’s delightfully insecure-and- overcompensating-with-snarky-bravado perspective, carries a tone that will likely have readers chortling in recognition. A promising beginning to a complex exploration of good and evil, as well as friendship’s loyalty
I definitely don't want to give anything away about the ending, but I have to give the authors credit for a really stunning climax which had me desperate to get my hands on the next in this 5-book series. I can't wait to find out where we go from here! (Jim Dean)

The story is good. The voices of characters are portrayed well. The reading of the narrative is stilted and a little odd. Takes a bit to get used.

Good story but really annoying voice and pronunciation of vowels that distracts when you’re listening.

I found the story to be much what you would expect from the genre and the targeted age demography. It flowed well and didn't spend onerous amounts of time waffling on.

My main issue arises from the narrator. I'm fairly new to the world of audiobooks, so my apologies if this relates to my limited experience. The narrator was overly dramatic throughout the course of the story. This was appreciated in times of high anticipation and drama, but was utterly not appropriate when describing mundane tasks such as eating. So much so was the narrator's flair for the dramatic that he often struggled with linking words within a sentence. He sometimes built up the line and climaxed before it finished. It made for an, at times, somewhat disjointed experience.

Overall though, I was happy to be able to turn off the rubbish on the radio and listen to something different on the long drives to and from work.

Heavy, dramatic narration.
