Der amerikanische Marinesoldat Pinkerton vertreibt sich die Zeit seines Aufenthaltes in Nagasaki mit der jungen Japanerin Butterfly. Für ihn ist es lediglich eine Affäre, für das junge Mädchen allerdings die große Liebe. Beide heiraten und Butterfly wird dafür von ihrer Familie verstoßen. Kurz nach der Hochzeit verlässt Pinkerton mit seiner Einheit Japan und kehrt nach Amerika zurück, ohne zu wissen, dass seine junge Braut ein Kind von ihm erwartet. Drei Jahre vergehen ohne ein Lebenszeichen. Doch Butterfly hofft unablässig auf Pinkertons Rückkehr. Eines Tages kehrt der Untreue tatsächlich nach Nagasaki zurück. Doch er ist inzwischen neu verheiratet und will lediglich sein Kind, von dessen Existenz er erfahren hat, zu sich holen. Butterfly gibt ihren Sohn unter Tränen weg - und bringt sich anschließend aus Verzweiflung über den doppelten Verlust um.
